Anyone interested in some short local So. Cal. runs? I have many weekends free and I need to get the speedy out. I drove up Carbon Canyon last Saturday and back home, just to get the webs out. Anybody else need to get their fix of curves, wind & just flat out full throttle.
Some ideas: Temecula Old Town, Old Town Whittier, Back roads in San Diego, Long Beach, Crystal Cove, etc.

Hey Gabe!

There's a group of Porsche folks that meet on the 2nd Sunday of each month (rain or shine) for a cruise through Silverado and Trabuco canyons. They end up at Rose's Cantina (just the other side of O'Neil Park on Trabuco Canyon) for drinks and some grub.

They meet at 3:00pm at the Knowlwood Burger joint that is on the Sand Canyon exit off the Southbound 5 Fwy (in Irvine). I've been several times and there were cars from the 356 Registry and some replica Speedsters/Spyders. They're a nice group that just enjoy a nice Sunday afternoon drive through the back roads of Orange County.

So, if you're jonesing for a cruise this Sunday (5/14/06) you should check it out. For more details check out http://www.socalcarculture.com/
Gabe/Jim,
I'd be interested in some short weekend cruising with you guys. I drive Carbon Canyon to/from work everyday in my POS Honda commuter but the ride is much different (better) in the Speedie. I can't do this Sunday but I can probably do something next weekend for sure.

Prior to the Speedie I restored and babied a Mercedes Roadster. That was a fun drive on warm Summer nights --- can't wait to start doing that with the Speedie. :-)

BTW guys, I'm a newbie 'round these parts so if there's a protocol with the Speedie runs, you'll need to clue me in a little...

All these sound sweet, so lets make a date and run for fun... I'd perfer an afternoon thing that allows us to hit the road when its warm already.. Gabe/Dan/ Vince/Jimbo, whom ever.. Gabe I hope you got my email about this Saturdays soccer game and my timeline... We can still hook-up and take in a dinner or something later.. I look foward to it.. and welcome our Poly boy from Chino hills.. very cool! maybe we can do carbon canyon and then hits some golf balls at a golf course or a late lunch too.!

Our Arrowhead run is on June 10th, we picked this date due to some key people not being available on the weekend of the 3rd-4th....
I would have no problem changing the Arrowhead date, but I would like to hear from some of the people who are planning to attend the Arrowhead run, especially Joe L. and any others who were busy on the 4th weekend to hear their thoughts...
Vince et al,

We were planning on the 10th for the Arrowhead run, I think we can change that date to the 17th, 24th or July 1. I sure wish we could make the 3rd and 4th for Temecula, too bad we have non-refundable airfares for that weekend... I'll monitor this thread for changes.

Curt
The only problem with the Balloon Festival, would be parking. LOT'S OF PEOPLE, VERY LITTLE PARKING.

I was thinking of another date for Temecula, like the 20th, next Sat. or the 24th of June. They are having Western Days in Old Town on the 20th of May. We can go up early, maybe around 7 or 8am from the OC.

If the 24th of June is better for everyone instead, we can cruise up some of the back roads and end up at Lake Skinner for a day picnic, some fishing, kids can swim in the pool, or just sit around a eat and talk.

I will reserve a picnic area for us if you all want to do the 24th at Lake Skinner.

Please let me know by the 25th of this month, so I can reserve.

Gabe
Gabe, sounds good you are the MAN! I look forward to seeing and meeting you. I will have my Speedie there too! Park is very small so I am sure I'll see your ride. I'll be the large Mexican in red yelling at kids! LOL... You know I keep reading this tread and it becomes very aparent that we have WAY to much to do in Cali. OMG just from this tread we can cover the entire summer and fall too!

Gotta love it!

Hey Dan!

Sorry to have missed the opportunity to hook up with you for a Crystal Cove meet. Me and my son were in Moab (Utah) this past weekend bouncing off some huge boulders on some CRAZY 4x4 trails! Spectacular scenery too!

Since Crystal Cove is just down the hill from me I'll probably be there this Saturday (5/20/06) for a short period. I'll be the short gangster-looking guy standing by a silver Speedster stuffing a cinnamon roll in his face. Maybe I'll see you there!

Hope our paths cross soon - maybe the 356 Concourse D'Elegance at Dana Point?
Robby, we will have an Itinerary set up before too long, but the 101 is the main artery north/south to lake arrowhead and we will need to use it at some point anyway, if we have other cars coming from the valley you can meet up with them, I may take the 110 to the 5 to the 101, as we get closer to the date we can have some of the guys throw out suggestions for routes depending on where they are located, and we will come up with a few meeting spots.....
I need someone who went last time to tell me the route we took, it was pretty scenic but I can't remember.....I would prefer less freeway and more canyons....
Hey Dan!

I just realized that this weekend (5/20/06) I'm pre-running a 4x4 trail in the Big Bear mountain area for an upcoming Range Rover gathering. My senior moments are occurring with more frequency.

I'm sorry if I mis-spoke about meeting at Crystal Cove, but maybe we can push it back to the next Saturday (Memorial weekend). We avoid going anywhere on holiday weekends and historically there has been a huge attendance at Crystal Cove on that particular weekend.

Been awhile since our last contact - hope all is well with you and the family!
Hey Adrian & Gabe!

If you guys are looking for cruise opportunities - check out the web link I posted earlier in this thread (SoCalCarEvents). Click either the 'Events' or 'Cruise Nights' tab for gatherings that best suit your driving needs.

Adrian, The Good News: there is a group of Porsche guys (real and replica cars) that meet on the 1st Sunday of each month close to your neighborhood in Yorba Linda (I think that's the area) on the corner of Lambert/Carbon Canyon (?) and cruise up Carbon Canyon to Flo's (Chino Airport) for breakfast (gotta have the mega-size chicken-fried steak). The Bad News: they meet at 6:30am. You should find more info on this on the noted website. I went once and had fun, but leaving my house at 5:30am for a 6:30am rendevous is TOO intense for my lazy ass on a Saturday morning.

On another note, if you don't have anything to do on Sunday (6/11/06) try to attend the VW Classic at the Verizon Amphitheater (Irvine). Check out the info on the noted website. I go each year (because of my deeply rooted love for things air-cooled) and there is a HUGE collection of cool VWs in EVERY configuration (and some Speedies as well). You might even find something in the swap-meet/vendor section that you HAVE to have for your Speedy. I go each year, but last time my son almost convinced me to buy a lowered, crew-cab transporter with a 2.2L 911 engine sporting polished 14" Fuchs. The car was right, the price was right - but if I had driven that bad-boy home (NO room in the garage or parking space) my wife would have kicked my ass into next week!!! Anyway, I'm sure you would have a good time.

Hope this info is useful for you, or any of the other SOC'ers in SoCal area jonesing for an excuse to drive their Speedies!
Jim -- thanks for the info. I'm going to have to check that out sometime. What about Crystal Cove? Is that every Saturday? What time does that one start/end?

I'm going to try and swing the Arrowhead run too. We'll see how the calendar works out on that one.

But Irvine for the VW show is a Green Light for sure. I've been going to that show forever -- I never miss it...
Wow, Crystal Cove looks fantastic! So how long does this show run?

Dan - thanks for offering to meet up with me. I won't be able to make this Saturday or next, due to other obligations but I might be able to make June 3rd.

So are you guys regulars at this show? It would be nice to meet up sometime and go for a drive down the coast for lunch aftewards.

Gabe - I took the Speedie out for a late afternoon/early evening cruise thru Carbon Canyon yesterday after a fresh waxing. Thought about that pic of you cruising thru there. What a nice little drive I had last night!

And Jim, I dit it with a Sh** Eating Grin the whole time :-)
Adrian, My Brutha!

Crystal Cove is a shopping plaza on PCH between Newport and Laguna Beach (Trader Joe's and other specialty and upscale shops and restaurants). The car meet happens every Sat morning (rain or shine). Cars start arriving in the parking lot at 6:15 A.M. or so, because parking in the designated 'show' area is limited to about 150 spaces. Even if you are unable to park in the designated area to 'show'your car, there is ample adjacent parking to see cars of every make and style. Partly because of the area (Newport, Laguna Beach), there are beaucoup high-end Euro cars, but also hot rods and customs. There are usually a couple of replica Speedy's and Spyders there. Needless to say, it draws a big crowd every Sat morning. It's all very cool.

The cars in the 'show' area usually start pulling out around 8:30 A.M. (plaza restrictions) but a lot of people and cars linger for a while longer for breakfast or Starbuck's coffee.

Google 'Crystal Cove Car Meet' for more info.

Let me know when you might plan on going and I will try to meet you there (maybe Dan P. and some of the locals can make an impromptu appearance also).
