When I was a kid I had a 58 bug that I installed a Judson supercharger on -easy job. It was lubricated by a glass jar of Marvel Mystery oil that hung on the firewall with a needle valve for drip rate. One morning I opened the valve too much (probably hung over) and laid down a huge smoke screen! It was very quick stoplight to stoplight-after that nothing left. I had to prop open the lid with a block of wood to clear the carb.

I got it  for free but I think the price was $300. Today they go for $1500 but they are impossible to find.

Well, because the stock VW gearing was pretty much all done at about 80mph when the engine was cranking well over 4,000 rpm, the whole front of the car began to lift at about 70 mph making the steering squirrelly, the drum brakes would fade at your one and only panic stop (and you couldn't stop quickly after that) and it was making a whole lot of noise.

So the Judson would get you up to 70+ real fast - a real "between the stoplights" king, but it couldn't go much faster, anyway.
