Peter--nothing wrong with swing axle. In fact with a camber compensator you have a great ride.
Re-check with Kirk, maybe there was some misunderstanding about "only swingaxles".
I will when I meet him. Thanks. I'm sure there was a mistake. Not that I care that much. Like the classic look and think that is easier to attain with the swingaxle,No?
Having owned both IRS and swing axle Speedsters I recommend the IRS. It is more predictable and easier to get along with, normally. That said, my current Speedster is a swing axle (number 3 car....) The swing axles are ok, but if you drive agressively then the camber compensator is highly recommended....
I am not aggressive in driving habits,but like a good feel under my butt too. I wonder if I'd feel the diference as I am quite conservative in my driving style. Comes with the aging process I've noticed.
Just purchased mine in September and it was IRS as I specified.

I got my ticket at VNY in 1978.
Peter - I don't drive my swing-axle '95 VS aggressively, but the addition of front & rear stabilizer bars made a VERY noticeable improvement on its handling.

I will specify f/r sway bars for sure if it's a swingaxle. So many questions. A test drive will help a lot. Been dwelling on this from afar for too long. Will be meeting folks at Vintage the week of 10/18...as excited about that as the kids are about the Disneyland visit that week!

I would go IRS if there is a choice. There are reasons VW improved the car by upgrading to IRS.
IRS Pans are harder to come by and a bit more expensive but a better solution by far.

I'm sure IRS is better, but with sticky tires and a camber compensator, I've been very pleased with the handling of my swing-axle car. The ride is surprisingly good to - MUCH smoother than my old MG.

GB - AARRGH matey! We be sailing a Catalina '36 (the Chevy of sailboats). Nice stiff boat, easy sail, sleeps 7 comfortably (tight quarters but comfy).
Now that you're in Dana, we'll get together sometime with Will Pierson go for a sail (he's also a charter Capt). His handle on here is 'Billyfeet' but we call him Capt Ron.
I think my sways are 3/4". Made a huge difference in my swing-axle cornering.
