I am working on a friend's sandrail, changing carbs et. Stock 1600 w/dual port and typical dune buggy dual exhaust. It is getting dual Solex 35s(got the carbs already) and aircooled.net is out and no fill is in sight for the SVDA distributor.

I found this:http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles/carbs101.htm

I am wondering if anybody got one, any good, etc. It looks like a good deal as it comes with the points eliminator.

Feedback appreciated, as I don't want my friend to have to be a guinea pig on this.

We have an engine that AJ "designed" for us. His heads, Kadron/Solex carbs, and SVA distributor purchased from him. The cam cut and manufacturer (WEB) based on his suggestion. The push rods, stroker crank, rockers, connecting rods, again bought from a list of suggested parts.

I have to say that the mill performs like a buzz saw ! ! Revs past 8,000 and back to 800 in the blink of an eye. OUTSTANDING in every way. It's based on a tiny 1641, but pulls the wheels every time we race it.

The performance doesn't really seem any different with the SVA distributor or the 009 with a Pertronix packed into it. Same wonderful response, same strong high rev range with either distributor.

All of this to say that if you can't locate an SVA with a curve/spring change and have a nice old German 009, use the 009. It'll work just as well.

Luck!

OOOOOPPPPS!

I ordered it anyway, I guess I'll let you know how it works out. Installed the Solex carbs today, started right up and idled smooth after warmup right out of the box. Still have to add extra gaskets unde the fuel pump, 3.5 psi right now, looking for 1.5-2. Chabged all the fuel hoses, added a brass T, new filter etc. Need heat riser blockoffs, need to neaten up the wiring, then I'll sync and adjust, replace distributor and adjust timing. This will be one happy sandrail customer, as it had a REALLY worn Weber progressive on it.

Also, I need to either replace or shorten the Morse cable. There are no holes in the aftermarket chrome(no vanes and/or thermostat, eeeek!)shroud. So I have to make some and run the cable through, except it is about 2 feet too long and they don't like to be bent that much. So I'll have to make a bracket/clamp back by the trans and make it a straight shot to the linkage. The new bellcrank linkage picks up the cable in the factory location. The Weber had the cable wrapped under the engine and not secured to anything! Some people have a funny way of "engineering" things.
Alan, aircooled.net. I think they were $450. Bolted them on and it ran smooth. Once I get the distributor and dial them in the customer should be happy. It is the Solex 35 PDSIT kit, w/chokes. I guess I should take pictures when it's done, eh?

Daniel,,
Have you gotten a chance to test the new carbs out yet ?? It would be cool to get your impressions of impact of the carb change,, and then the results of swapping in the svda. The svda has several advertized benefits,,, but smooth performance is #1.

I am tempted to bring in the Hotspark distributor first, and test it with my pict34. Then,, order the dual solex's.

Good Luck,, and let us know how it goes !
Well, the sandrail is all done, and the owner is VERY happy. To refresh, he went from a very worn Weber progressive(wouldn't idle) and a 009 w/points to dual Solex 35PDSIT(aircooled.net) and a Hot Spark SVDA. The SVDA gives about ten degrees more advance at part throttle and defintely removes the dreaded 009 flat spot. The only thing I didn't like about the Hot Spark is there is no mark to align the rotor to the dizzy body for initial timing. Also, the o-ring they include is an o-ring, not ovaled like the VW one. But other than that, plug and play, the female spade connectors are already on the wires. Also replaced the fuel pump and ended up with seven gaskets to keep the pressure down to 2 psi. He said it has never had this much power or run this smooth ever.

Starting cold is easy, key on, one pump to set the floats, turn the key. It fires and settles into a high idle, then drops a step into a slightly lower idle as it warms, then the chokes fully open. Easy peasy, as WB says. I want to drive it around a little and fine tune it, but that will probably wait till spring, as I have no room to store it in the garage right now. Anyway, the Weber carb was close to $400 to replace, and the solexes were $450, so IMHO that was a good deal for him. I probably should have pushed him to get 40 IDFs, but that would have been a bit more.
I have a 67 beetle with a stock 1600 DP motor. It came with a Bocar 34 PICT 3 carb and a 009 distributor. The car had the typical flat spot off idle and would sputter a little if I floored the throttle in 2nd or 3rd. I also had hot running issues. I solved a portion of the hot running because it had the wrong size fan. But the car still ran too hot. I bought a Bosch SVDA distributor from CB Performance. It took me about 1/2 hour to replace the dizzy and shoot the timing. The driveability is amazing with this distributor. The car drives so much better. No flat spot, stuttering, or having to play the throttle and clutch. I have not done a full freeway run yet, but the short run I did I think that the oil temp went down 20 degrees from what the same run would have been with the 009. The temp issue aside, the smotth running and throttle response make the SVDA the best $140 I have spent! I don't know what the difference would be with dual 40 or 44 Webers. I may check if my IM has vacul ports on the 40 IDF Webers that would run with this distributor. If so I will try it on the IM. I'll post when I have made some high speed runs on the oil temp issue and will investigate the vacuum port on Weber issue. Does anyone know about running Weber 40 IDF's wih a vacuum dizzy?
I tried ACNET about 3 weeks ago and they were and still are out of stock. The one I bought from CB Performance is a real Bosch VW Mexico distributor. I looked at the HotSpark unit and almost bought one. But through trial and error, mostly my error, I am learning to buy factory VW, even if the " factory" is in Mexico or Brazil, parts if possible. I talked to Aircooled.net when I first ordered the distributor from them and they did not say why or how long they were out of stock. I hope that the Bosch unit is not out of production.
