After some delays we’re finally starting my engine swap.
NA -EJ long block, King Performance bearings/pistons, OEM everything else
TBD: -headers, muffler, exhaust setup, ECU
Just got the manifold back from the powder coater. Intake will be polished.

I like the black
Very nice. I think you'll find the exhaust setup is pretty much dictated by the frame and other components. The Suby and Type 4 are both a little easier to make and fit than than the Type 1.
Thanks @edsnova. Exhaust is either going to be something custom fabbed from a shop that is next to the installer or like a bolt on magnaflow or whatever. The NA doesn’t quite have that sweet Suby grumble so hoping to have something that sounds somewhat decent without pissing off the neighbors as much as the Type 1 did lol.
But I’m having a Speedster built by Greg and he’s being gracious enough to let me Re-use that swapped 2332cc in that build to save a few bucks since - no more Suby builds unfortunately.
We’re going to give this thing a whirl as well. https://www.t7design.co.uk/3-5...12v-258-319-2b8.html
Yeah, small is best. I'll be interested to learn how it fits.
When I did the Suby swap into the MG TD I went with the most common small cube aftermarket hot rod heater.
The choice was easy, since those heaters were made to mimic the Arnolt heaters MG dealers and others installed as an aftermarket accessory in the original TDs.
Update- engine pulled. fuel tank sent out for mod. Long block ready. Cooling, wiring, ECU in the works while these things get sorted. Trans pulled as I’m added a Qauife and we’re going to regear. To which I have a question-
with the Quaife is a 3:88 the best ratio to go with? I’m thinking longer 3/4 gears, which will cost more and then keeping the standard gearing for 1/2. From what I’ve gathered 3:44 will not work/be ideal with the Quaife.
I know w a 4 speed I can’t have it all but I’d like to try and find the best mix of low end torque + not losing too much on the top end for hey driving. Is it a one or the other type scenario? Like can’t have my cake and it it too without the inevitable change to a 5 speed, which I’m not doing?
Thanks in advance!
What RPM do you want to be at when cruising at 70mph on the highway ?
once you know that you can work out what gears to use ,
You do not want too low RPM as you want the cooling fan to do its job .
Thanks Greg. Tank went out today!
FYI, the gears Greg posted.
1st and 2nd are custom, not stock VW.
3rd and 4th are stock, 1.22 is a Bus 3rd and 0.82 is a Bus 4th(I think).
Happy Wednesday All-
Swap is getting close to done and I was curious if anyone can give me the specs for best alignment w castor/toe etc? As well as best front/rear tire pressure. Currently running the Pirellis that came on it. Much appreciated and I can’t wait to get this car back and able to enjoy what’s left of optimal driving weather.
Wound up going w a Guard TBD as well as GT gears in the newly rebuild trans from German Transaxle.
Suby NA EJ25, new headers, keeping the Magnaflow exhaust. Used a Chase Bays Rad made for an Integra w 20an coolant lines. King Performance bearings, heavy duty Stage 1 clutch.
OEM ECU and will get it tuned and dyno’d once complete but expecting about ~175hp to keep it simple and manageable.
Alignment for a VW beam- 4-5° positive caster, ½° negative camber, 1/16- 1/8" toe in. For tire pressures start with 26-28 psi back, 20-22 psi front. Sounds like it's going to be a blast to drive!
You were talking about the sound of the exhaust from what I heard it seems to be dependent on either unequalled lenght or equal length headers. Unequalled length I believe gives you a more ACooled sound.
As to heater and AC, I have Vintage Air it does both with a subie engine.

Yes. Here are the headers- with these and the Magnaflow I think it will sound good.
