Do swing axles have oil deflector / oil slinger washers? Where do they fit on the outer assembly? Gordon forwarded me a cool exploded view of the outer swing axle assembly. I'm missing some parts and have some others, so it's a good beginning, but nobody I know has seen a swing axle car with the oil deflector washer in place as indicated in the drawing. Are they not really needed, or . . .

Where can a get a couple if they ARE necessary?

Any help ? ! ? !

Thanks!

The oil slinger is not functionally required...
Unless You have an OIL LEAK!
(then it directs the leaking trans. oil to the outside of the drum and away from the brake shoes).
This exploded view is for 1965 on back. The brake drum (not shown) has a hole that recieves the tube part of the deflector (14).

I think it was in 66 or '67 that they (VW)altered the retainer (12)to have a drain hole that matches up with a drain hole in the backing plate (3) to allow the leak (if any) to exit through the BACKSIDE of the backing plate. Thus avoiding some of the mess on the brake shoes. (It's still a mess if you have a leak) The later swing axle transaxles didn't use the oil deflector (14) with tube.

Greg,

I think you've elaborated my problem with your description. I have a pair of those old style slingers, and the old style bearing housings, but I'm using four lug rather than the necessary five lug drums.

The five lug drums would permit the use of the old style slinger since the have the hole in the side for the tube and the hole on the face for the bent tongue as well. The four lug drum is the same as the ones on the '68 and up Beetles. An IRS drum more or less.

I guess that I need to score a pair of later bearing housings, the ones with the drain holes (and I believe that they're just a bit "taller" as well) from a '66 to '68 swing axle.

Thanks! Time to post in the wanted section . . .
