I am a newbie and recently acquired a speedster I am in the process of major upgrades, I have purchased the 356 Porsche: A Restorer's Guide to Authenticity by Brett Johnson (I am going the classic route) unfortunately the book will only arrive in South Africa in four weeks time. I am pressed for time as the paint shop needs to paint the shell (black). Could anyone offer assistance concerning switch and gauge placement on a speedster dash, I have searched the forum could not find any information. Please refer to the attachment. Thanks

I'd check with the folks at Vintage Speedster they should be able to send you a spec sheet. by email on that  One thing I did, that I really get good feedback on are the switch bezels  I used mid 50s ford truck switch trim and the vw  switch ferals  and vw s switches  . The bezels are labeled    wiper , lights , Ignition. a neat touch. that looks very factory.

I made the colum from  conduit pipe and spliced 2 vw steering shafts together to make it long as I wanted it  the turn switch is a 67 bus unit and it has a headlight dimmer switch in the stalk. ( a must have.) I have a copper pipe spool  epoxied (un grounded) on the shaft 10 inches down from the top, it has a wire soldered to the spool that goes into the shaft and up to the horn button.   a  3/8 steel nipple is welded to the outer colum case inline with the inner spool . I used a milk carton to make a  liner for a carbon contact brush with a wire coming off it and spring. Its the best way to make a good horn   circuit. I love the flat 4  Banjo wheel  but the adapter  was hard part to convert But they now offer one . But not when I did mine  Mooneyes .com to your rescue

Manny;

I took these measurements this morning from my 2002 VS, left hand drive with the standard VS gauge package from that time. I only have one knob outboard rather than two. I believe that the placement of that knob is correct and that the second knob you show would be placed at the same height from the bottom of the dash and directly in the middle between the center of the first instrument gauge and that outboard knob.

In any event, here is what I found, in inches from my dash:

A= 1 1/2 "

B= 1 1/2 "

C= 2 1/2 "

D= 4 1/2 "

E= 2 1/2"

F= no measurement / no knob

G= 1 1/2 "

H= 2 3/4 "

I = 11 3/16 "

J = 4 5/8 "

K = 4 5/8 "

L = no measurement / no knob

M = (modified to reflect the distance between the outboard knob and the center of the combo gauge or whatever gauge you will place there) 9 1/2 ".

I would consider looking at Der White's website or the 356 Registry website to confirm these numbers. I bet there is info on one or both of those sites. You might also contact some of the builders as suggested above.

Good luck and WTTM!

Thanks much appreciated.
