Vince,

Jake Raby has done some testing on synthetics... look in the archives for a discussion. Based on that info I used Vavoline Full Synthetic for 3,000 miles and noticed a significant temp drop after a normal warm up. The car sustained lower temps on long distance runs too.'

Downside is you will find any and all possible leaks. I had synthetic drips all over a drip pan for those 3,000 miles. I have bought all new hoses for the external cooler and will place special attention on this fit and the oil filter fit, and go with it again. I'll let you know what happens. Good news was there were no leaks at the case or sump.

Vince, I just had my motor upgrade to a 2110. I put about 200 miles in it before storing it for the winter. This spring I'm going with synthetic. One oil change I'm going to try Amsoil 20W50 and the next I'll try Royal Purple 20W50. I've already put synthetic in my tranny (Red Line).

Jake: I was just about to mention that.

Vince: It takes at least a couple of thousand miles to get the rings seated and everything nicely broken in. Once that is done and you're beyond the "extended" break-in period you could switch over to synthetics for their benefits.

I have a friend with a volvo diesel in his sailboat who ran synthetic from day one and it's ALWAYS used oil (been a quart every 10 hours of use for several years now). This past Summer I got him to run regular 30W non-detergent for the season and, after a wind-less run to Maine and back with constant engine usage it finally seated the rings and stopped burning oil. NOW he can switch back to Synthetics.

OK, So the way I understand it, when I change oil in a few more
hundred miles, I'm going to use the standard stuff...Probably
10-30...After I have a few thousand miles on it, or maybe
at the 3K miles point, take it in for a valve adjust and switch to synthetic, and run with it.......MR356 is a Sunday cruiser
it will take some time to get to 2 or 3K miles....
Thanks to all.......
I wish it was that easy......As much fun as that would be..Not retired yet like the higher percentage on the site......
some weekends can't even get the car out for a few hours...I do however plan to attend the 50th anniversary in northern cal, this summer..might be the only vacation I get this year....
Found an old trunk, told the wife to pack light (like thats possible)
