My engine came back from a rebuild and now the tachometer is acting odd. First, it is not accurate and appears to be doubling the RPMs.
For example, in fourth gear doing 60 mph the tachometer is pegged at 6000+
The second problem, is that whatever value it has, it doesn't stand still. I can be driving along at a constant speed and it will suddenly be somewhat accurate, then swing way back up again.

My rebuilder did say to me that he found an extra wire coming off the coil, but did not know what it was. Could this have anything to do with the tach's strange behavior?
I don't see how an engine rebuild could affect tach?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. It is a 2009 VS with their instrument cluster.
