My ignition system has a rev limiter. When I hit the limit the needle on the tach jumps wildly.
With a simple ignition system the tach is connected to the coil, no sender.

tach signal comes off the neg. side of the coil. a loose wire or a push on terminal that is splayed open will make it jump like crazy. it'll be a white wire ont he coil. If it is not loose there, look at the back of the tach for 3 wires in a line (+, 1, -). "+" is a red wire, "-" is a brown wire and "1" is the white tach signal wire. any of these 3 loose will do the same.
Several of us have had the internal ground connection within the tach fail.... A ground connection to the tach's case will usually fix this problem....
