I have a 2000 Vintage Speedster with the dual pipe TriMil exhaust.

I've always noticed on these cars (including mine) that the pipes have a slight downward angle of departure (moving away from the engine to the rear bumber).  I was thinking about heating the pipes at the muffler with a propane torch and then moving them (the tips) up slightly (so that the tail pipes extend extend parallel to the ground).  This would not only look better but, more importantly, give me an extra 1/2 to 3/4in. ground clearance.  Every so often the tips on mine will bottom out going up or down a driveway (going slowly and angleing).

I was just wondering whether anyone else here has tried this, and if so with success ?

All input welcomed.

Thanks, Grant

An oxy-acetylene torch is the way to heat them, but I wouldn't recommend doing that on the car. I would definitely remove the exhaust. You may be able to bend them slightly when cold if you have a long(6 ft. or so) pipe that just fits either inside or outside of the tailpipes. Just go slow, you don't want to crack them.

I cranked my Berg exhaust pipes a bit - I have a flat, left-to-right muffler on either side of the center (collector) of the headers so I didn't have to anchor anything to act as a fulcrum.

No heat, although heating the bends as the exhaust exits the mufflers would have helped, just a 2" dia. by 4 ft long piece of pipe stuck in the end of the exhaust pipe and bend them very slowly and very gently up.  I had clearance issues with the pipe/lever and the bottom of the body so never got them truly horizontal, but they did move.

Based on experience, a Propane torch won't give enough heat to do a proper job, but a MAPP gas torch would.  It looks basically the same as a propane torch, but the tank is usually yellow (and takes a slightly different torch unit).  If you can heat the bends with that, then use a shorter piece of leverage pipe, pushing up on it very slowly with a floor jack til they both look good and the same angle.
