Steve and John,
I can see how my post might seem a bit unusual and our owning three of them a bit extravagant. Perhaps a little history of how this evolved might help. First of all, the Carpet Barn is our neighbor, not us. We are in the software development business and own a building next to the Carpet Barn on a very busy boulevard. For most of my life I have had the desire to restore a Porsche Speedster or a Karman Gia. Last winter while installing the software at a new client in Hawaii, I had a chance to drive a Speedster replica and I was hooked.
I convinced my business partner to buy one with me, and we ordered two of them from Kirk at Vintage Speedsters. Then, over a beer or two--maybe one too many--we decided to order another, so that we could sell one, make a few bucks, and experiment with different options such as sway bars, wider tires, larger motors, different transmissions, maybe even a different builder. You guys know what it's like wanting to do things differently the second time around. We'll we just shortened the time frame a bit.
Anyway, we applied for an Arkansas car dealor license (not hard to get but the insurance is a bit steep) so that we can avoid registration fees and put a dealor plate on them and have some fun driving them. However, we do want to keep the miles low so that we can sell them and cover our costs.
There's no catch here. These are brand new Vintage Speedsters in perfect condition. You guys know enough about the prices for these vehicles to know that we're not marking them up much at all.
We set them out front this week (see pictures above) and had three parties stop and inquire about them in the first hour. A banker said he almost had a wreck hitting his brakes and doing a u-turn to see them. We quoted him $1,000 more than the posted price above.
Anyway, now as Paul Harvey says, "you know the rest of the story".
Let me know if you want to see more pictures.
Bill
