I've decided to use the motor that was destined (formerly) for my 914 and put it into my 356 coupe. I would rather use it "as is" and adjust the sheet metal inside the engine compartment to seal correctly against the engine tin. The rear will need a little more convincing to accept the fan shroud and all, but I'm not bothered by body metal.
I figured the air intake surface on the 914 and compared it to the late model aircooled Bus, and was wondering if I removed the inner drain trays from behind the rear deck lid grills and propped the lid up in the front like the early Abarths and used stand off'/latch extenders like the racing Fiat 500's . . .
. . . would the engine get enough air to run as designed.
By adopting the alterations that I've described, the square inches/cubic inches of cooling surface, and the "air box" of the engine compartment , exceeds that of either the 914 or type IV Bus. I would like to use my remote oil cooler set-up as well, so that might help somewhat, although I'm not sure with the type IV.
Any help or opinions before I commit myself to the project?
Thanks ! !
