You should also have two positions for brake light switches. Follow the VW wiring diagram (and you can have a "Brake Failure Light" on the dash!), or, if you just say "the HELL wid it!" when trying to wire them up, just use one as a brake-only switch. Hook up each one and use the one that lights the brakes with the least pedal movement/pressure (it's usually the back one, but I found the front one required less pressure to actuate and used that).

Nope - the other way around. The "front" brake line fitting on the master cylinder is farthest toward the front bumper, while the "rear" line fitting is closest to the pedals (or the rear of the car).
