I was looking for options to finish the engine compartment. I was wanting to paint the motor tins in black, and I really liked the look of the factory tar panel material. It looks like JPS uses it a lot in his builds. Has anyone found this material in bulk?

Don't people usually spray the bedliner stuff then paint body color over it?

I had a 77 Scirocco painted in the 80s(color change to white) and the rockers, front and rear lower bodywork, and underbody got sprayed with "Shutz". That looked like a lighter version of bedliner and was very tough, then paint was sprayed over it. Looked nice, and I never got rock chips.

Lowered, original GTI wheels, Zender front airdam and "S" emblems in RED. It was a great looking, handling car. Plus all the go-fast stuff(2nd engine I ever did), it was a FUN car, and quick. I beat a 924 over a mountain road. I was 22 and invincible...

My son (33 y/o father of 4) bought a 15 y/o Ram 4WD with all the usual attendant rust.

He bought a pile of patch panels, cut out the rust, welded in the panels, did a minimal amount of body-filler work, scuffed and masked the truck, and shot the entire thing in black Raptor Liner.

It’s one of the coolest trucks I’ve ever seen. Post-apocalyptic steampunk. Everybody agrees, the body-filler was completely unnecessary.

I’m not sure what that has to do with anything, but it really is a cool truck.

Danny, you can get the stuff "tintable", just add paint color to match... then the color is all the way through, not just on top.👍

I remember that gen Scirocco, my step-dad had a 'Brazil' brown in 80-83ish.  Somehow that thing had warm air blowing from the heater before it even got out of the driveway. (thinking it was a 79)  He traded for 83 Supra -big step up in amenities and more rear seat room (just more, still not lot's).  Had another friend that raced that gen Scirocco in SCCA ITC. (1.5L engine I believe).   always liked those, sounds like you built one I would have appreciated.

Thanks Wrenn, you(I) can learn something every day!

I put a manual valve in the heater hose under the hood to stop that BS. I replaced that valve twice and it would always "bleed" and I always had heat. Annoying with no A/C and summer temps. 1/2" copper pipe and a gate valve was my seasonal solution.

It was a fun project car. I got a donor for $500 and rebuilt that engine while I was still driving it. I swapped the motor and trans in a day using a come-along and my grandmother's maple tree. The trans was a 5 speed from a diesel Rabbit. Added the factory rear wiper/hatch from the donor too.

I hand-ported the (now shaved) head and unshrouded the valves, port-matched both intake and exhaust manifolds. Bored it 0.020" over and used forged pistons. Couldn't upgrade the cam due to CIS injection. But removed the restrictive venturi in the throttle body and got a larger air sensor from a later(1800cc) car.

It really went well. It had Boge Turbo TS shocks which rode very stiff, I think they were for autocross. My girlfriend at the time complained that the bumps hurt her ****s especially in winter. The socks and aftermarket sway bars made it razor sharp. You could literally steer it with the gas pedal.

It was probably my most highly modded daily I ever had.

Why did I rebuild that extra motor? I went airborne and smacked the oil pan one night. Put a hole in it and broke the oil pickup off. Replaced that and welded the pan, was up and running. The engine always had a vibration/roughness to it after that. Turns out I snapped a piston skirt off and unbalanced the motor. I thought all the aluminum chunks in the pan were the oil pickup pieces...which I found out MUCH later.

Occasionally I toy with the idea of getting one, stripping the interior, caging it, and going ITB or ITC with it.

The "22 year old invincible me" inside says "Do it! 😈 " and I'll be happy to join you in the IT endurance, if they still have those.

The current me admits, while I miss the track & still have the suits from racing days (both nomex and leather), the helmets are way out of date, I'm too fragile for 2 wheels now and way too cheap for 4 wheels.  I'd bet you could get several other co-drive offers on here..maybe there's a certain 🦍 with a 💻 that could be tempted?  poke-poke

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Thanks for allowing the drift Eric.

I think VW/Porsche got overly sensitive to the bad rap their aircooled heaters got. My 968 is the same way. I pull it out of the storage unit and by the time I close the door and get back in to drive away, it’s blowing warm air. When it’s fully warmed up, you could do Bikram yoga in it. I rarely turn it past half way.

OTOH, my SC had a great heater, too. The aux fan made all the difference. Once th3 heat exchangers got warm, it blew hot air. The trick on the AC motors is the system has to be in perfect condition.

My Scirocco also had a Leistritz exhaust, with a 4-2-1 header and great sound. Before all the "ricer" cars, you know.

I'm good racing the Vee, but I like the way you think!

Thanks for allowing the drift, Eric!

Good Idea for sure on the bed liner - colouring !!

Did you see the Tar boards that Chris Vitone does for VW restoration those are cool too.

I'm thinking you really meant Chris Vallone. I went on his Bear Mountain cruise last fall in my Spyder. His shop is less than an hour from my house. He's a nice dude.
