I've had my eye on this wreck for a while now, mostly for the "tub" and numbers, the yard that it was in is closing down and being developed REALLY soon, they're crushing and hauling daily, so . . . I got it for free, AND a buddy grabbed it for me while I stayed home and drank hot cocoa!

Who says, "No pain, no gain"?

Here are some quick pics. I know, I know . . . but before you laugh use your imaginations, look closely at all that money just sitting there. Do I spy a complete e-brake assembly (without the handle, of course), or a day.night rear view mirror hanging there. Why LOOK, front beam, rear torsion housing, shifter and rod, heater cables and mechanism, wiring loam. key switch, wiper motor and mechanism, door latches. handles, complete door window frames, glass and mechanisms, AND a fuel tank.

Of course, all I'm REALLY after is the greenhouse, the remaining mechanicals and electrics will go. Maybe do 'er up "Cory Style"

I see that and I get all kinds of devious ideas... Ones that would make the PCA purists shriek with horror. Some bad-assed little outlaw with the WRONG engine and the WRONG brakes and a cut-down roof line. Too loud, too fast. Yeah baby!

Or get a title from a title service and put it on ebay. With a title this car is probably $2000 easy.

"Or get a title from a title service and put it on ebay."

Already dropped the original paperwork off at the Registry (DMV) title ought to be here in three weeks. Did it for real, no title serice needed.

A legal 356.

The totally cool part, as I've mentioned before, is that 356's are a unibody car with the suspension attached to the tub. No pan or frame like a VW or other older car. When a frame work is utilized, hand built or altered/partly based on another car, it's essentially a suspension or drivetrain upgrade. No big deal as far as the Officials are concerned. That, plus the age of the car, 1964, opens the door for any and all possibilities.

Of course, there IS that fine, fine rusty "patina" to contend with . . . of just leave alone. This month's 356 Registry has one fine rusted out coupe on the bottom right of the contents page and a primer 356 wheel standing drag car at the top right. I just MIGHT be right in step with the future.

What IS this world comin' to . . . ?! ?! ?! ?!
Yup! That's the one, 'cept it's a LOT cooler . . . now that I got it.

It looks worse than it is. The dent in the roof is now gone and looking great, the quarter metal is dented for sure, and missing in places, but what's there is way solid, and painted brown so it looks rusty but really isn't. My buddy couldn't resist and is pushing a lot of the dents out already . . . just cause they're there and he has to look at them 'til I come for it after Christmas.

The tub is certainly sound enough to accept fiberglass front and rear clips. I have extra doors for it, but I bet that fiberglass or aluminum skins over the original frame-work would be sweet and simple.

Other than that, it's almost a done deal. You know what I mean, we're only talking about a thin candy shell here.

Frames are frames, mechanicals are mechanicals, nuts bolts, metal and welding wire, but that titled tub makes all the difference. All of a sudden, it's a 356 . . . ! ! !
You've got me to thinking. Since you got that for ... free? ... I could help you offset the costs of transport -- wait. Your friend is bringing it to you -- yeah. I could offset the transportation costs AND help you get rid of the front and rear sheet metal ...
Okay. I've got it. I'll give you a BUCK for the sheet metal you're not using, and I'll fabricate the missing chunks and Emory my Hoopty!
Whaddya say? No scrap to haul; I'll come and get it!
You could make an easy dollar ...

Related, but not -- was that a Type 82 right next to it? With the coupe doors leaning on it? White in color? Hacked?
What's the asking on that bad little beast?
Jim, I haven't wrenched, welded or tinkered on much in the last few weeks. That two-liter is burning a hole in my pocket.
How cool would a six-banger-powered Thing be? Weld the doors up, paint it tan and mark it like the Afrika Korps?

TC, when you actually do take delivery, can you call me? I'd like to know what parts you want to rehab, which ones you'll be tossing and which pieces you're not going to use that I might want to make you an offer for. Seriously; you got me to thinking a while back about the VIN, resale and the ability to play at PCA events.
One of my friends (an Air Force guy) went on the recovery mission of a P-38 Lightning from a glacier a few years ago, and they essentially rebuilt the plane out of new parts, keeping the number plate as their registration for the 'historic' aircraft. It looks, quacks and flies like a duck, so why not?
You're right; you said the logic follows to old cars, and Maryland's Motor Vehicle Administration agrees. I'd have to keep it as a street rod for registration purposes, but it'd be a Porsche street rod, not a VW.
And I'd be happy to share some of your restoration labor in exchange for some useful (to me) panels you're probably going to toss.
When am I making interior panels for the Coupe Projekt you've already got going?
