Spotted Teby's Speedster at Cars and Coffee this morning. He wasn't around, but I know Teby's hand when I see it.

The new aquamarine paint and red leather are getting him closer and closer to that authentic look. And he's been hard at work on loads of other details, too.

Taking a page from Will Hesch's book, the Tebster has added a Fram filter housing, big nut and retro pulley on the generator, and big-buck air cleaners. He's even got the coil decal the right way around.

The wheel and dash trim look great. But he must have sunk a ton of cash into getting bluetooth input on that old Blaupunkt.

But what's this? I think Teby may be reading too many of Marty's posts here.

I built a wide body because I wanted something different from a classic Speedster.  Kind of a 356 Hot Rod, if you will.

I also didn't think that I had the patience to pull off a build that closely resembled an original 356 (the details can kill you).

If I had that patience, vision and the comittment to pull it off, I just wish I could do something as cool as Teby's car.   Man!  THAT thing is awesome!

Nefarious? Who, me?

I thought I would bust the Tebster's chops a bit, and that the membership would see at once what I was up to. But, could you actually build a car that would defy detection without looking underneath?

The funny thing is that my dead-stock (cosmetically) VS was parked 30 feet away and getting at least as much attention as this car. The owner said he drove it very little, other than to car shows. He was worried about rock chips and careless drivers.

Teby, take note. That could be you.

Mitch, Mitch, Mitch......HA!!!!!!

SHHHHHH!!   you were not supposed to tell anyone !!

It's as Mitch reports,  people love the cars  real or not  same attention called to both

..again that's why we are here!!

Great pics by the way........... beautiful car !!

Imagine IF someone actually produced a Kit that exactly represents the REAL car?  The Original Manx was a NON VW frame car, someone could do the same thing but use a actual 356 Chassis as a model. I'm amazed with the value of REAL Speedsters that there isn't a steel copy? With Modern materials and techniques it COULD be done! A replica could be made that is so close very few could tell the fake from the original!

And then we'd all be as anal as the real Porsche owners. No thanks- I like the idea that we can do anything to our cars and no one can has the right to say if it's right or wrong. Al

AL:

I can send you hundreds of photos showing you real Porsche owners doing what they want to their cars.. Hell, at a car show in Sacramento (1984) someone put a V6 in a 911 Targa !!    It happens  all the time, we are not privy to it because we don't hang out on the 356 registry...  Also  If someone did make a metal copy It still would be less than a real one and you would have those individuals making all sorts of mods to them..

I'm super anal when it comes to my car.. Because this hobby really isn't cheap and you don't want to do things twice!!

lol  and Terry Nuckles is so anal that he puts caution tape and cones around his car when he goes to the mini mart!! ....  lol

We all just have our own visions..  Even real owners..

Henry from IM could pull it off but it would would cost $$$$.  The problem is why would you put 75-HP on a chassis that can be built to handle over 300HP.  That is a pretty car but I would take what Bob and I have any day of the week and twice on Sunday.   I do like the gloves, hat and helmet though.

Right on, Marty.  For most of us, driving is the reason we have these cars.  And if a few more horsepower can make the drive more interesting, then so be it.  Where I live I need a car that can keep up with traffic on any highway, and that's what I had made.

Where is this cars and coffee at? The one down here in Irvine CA. was shut down. To  many cars in one place I guess.

Opie - There are quite a few Saturday Cars & Coffee events in Orange County. Here is the largest event to have replaced the Irvine Cars & Coffee. In fact, it draws an even larger crowd because of the space available.
