I've seen in the newer IM's the underdash which houses fan vents, radio, etc., has anyone had experience in fabricating one for an older model maybe, I like the idea it gives more room for some extras, and because most likely it would be covered with viny rather then painted it would make it easier to hide rough edges, any thoughts??

I made an IM style underdash for my Chesil here in the UK, as they are not available anywhere here. I used photographs of IMs found here in the photo section as inspiration.

I've uploaded 5 pictures illustrating the process I followed, plus a diagram of my plug from which I made my final GRP panel.

The key first step is to decide how to mount the new panel. In my chesil there is a steel bar under the dash that the steering column mounts to, though this is some 6 inches further forward than the dash face. I mounted my panel from this. Your car is likely different....

I decided I wanted my final panel to be GRP, so made a wood and filler plug from which to take a GRP mould, to then make a final GRP panel.

The whole process was very time consuming, but I'm really pleased with the final result.

the picture of the end result looks factory Simon, I'm impressed. I see how important it is to know how you want it mounted befaore beginning, also I was wondering about the ends but I see from you description that by sanding as you say you are really molding the fit, very ingenious. thanks and when I begin mine maybe I can call on you again for guidance please
