I have a desparate case of the "wants" for a Speedster replica, but I have never actually seen one except passing on the highway. Is there anyone in the TX Panhandle with a car who would let me look at it to determine if the object of my lust is what I actually want? I need find out to see if I should make realistic plans to purchase one or if I should find a new toy to lust after.
I realize that I am asking quite a bit, but I love to show off my special toys (like custom bows or a flintlock rifle) to interested lookers, so this may not be too wierd of a request.
Thanks,
Matt

"Spousal permission" refers to scheduling a day or day and a half on a weekend that I will be away by myself purely for entertainment rather than spending quality time with her and the kids. I generally get one morning a year for deer hunting and two or three mornings for bird hunting. I have given up fishing all together.
I sure hope that this doesn't sound like complaining because she might be checking up on my internet activity and find this message.

Vince, speechless? Nay, say it aint so Joe. There really is a tooth fairy and Santa Claus isn't there? Vince please say something... Don't lose your horns, you're such a breath of fresh air (even if it is hot and steamy at times). I look forward to you taking on issues that we may not be interested in but much like seeing that guy in the park on his soap box, we're all drawn in to listen to his oration.
I feel the need to chime in and defend myself. The "Spousal Permission" line was a joke. I do have a tough schedule with my and my wife's jobs and our two small children, so it is not easy to get out to do recreational stuff. It will probably take a while to fit in a trip to OKC.
And about the other (and remember, I am friendly but love to argue). . . Do you drive slowly enough that you don't kill any bugs?
Matt
Mr. Ward and Froelich,
Thanks for your kind words and offers to show me your Speedsters. It may take me a while to get to OKC, but if either of you are heading west, maybe we can get together sooner. I had hoped for an owner from Amarillo (100 miles south) to chime in, because I've seen a Speedster in AMA (a silver one, that's all I could tell on the divided interstate through town) and it seems like I had seen one for sale in the classified about a year ago. Anyway, the point is, before I spend a lot of my energy lusting for a new toy, I need to know if I will really like the toy if I were able to procure one.
I am involved in some other hobby areas, such as for custom recurve bows, side by side shotguns, and flintlock rifles, and I am quite willing to get togethether with prospective buyers to show off my toys, so I assumed that Speedster owners would be the same.
I'm sure that the people who chime in opposed to hunting (I have to repress my nature to say "opposed to wildlife") are much like me, just looking for someone to argue with. I hope that is the case.
Anyway, if you live close to the TX Panhandle and are willing to show me your Speedster, I would love to see it, but getting together over much distance will take me a while because I am married and am an active father of a 5 YO and a 2 YO. I will heartily appreciate any help from a current Speedster owner.
Thanks again,
Matt Branstine,
TX Panhandle (God's Country)
Matt: May I ask where exactly do you live in the TX panhandle? I spent three years in the Air Force at Amarillo Air Force Base (Radar Bomb Scoring), scoring bomb runs that started from almost every small town (Borger, Pampas, Dalhart, Canadian, Dumas, Plainview, Littlefield, Clarendon, Lubbock, Muleshoe....ad infinitum) surrounding Amarillo. The base is now gone. I never got to visit these places since I had no car ($78/month during the late fifties didn't buy much). My buddies and I did, however, spend a lot of time at our archery, pistol and model airplane hobbies. The only Porsches I saw were in Road & Track.
Barry,
I live in Gruver, which is completely top and center in the Panhandle. It is about 95 miles basically north of Amarillo and 35 miles from Guymon, OK.
Porsches are pretty rare around here. Most people drive white 4X4 pickups or Suburbans, although many are wishing they could get by with a small car now. I think our long, straight roads hurt the appeal of a sports car. I did drive a '76 914 for several years and miss the thrill I got from driving it. I have to drive quite a bit in my job and I often think it would be the best recreational bang for the buck if I could just enjoy the driving that I have to do. That is part of what is making me think about a Speedster. I realize that they are not practical transportation, but they will be better than a motorcycle, which has also crossed my mind some.
