er . . . ah . . .uummmmm . . . I mean . . . the HELP ! ! !
I've just started the finish rear end work on my SC Coupe. Decided upon a '68 transaxle in the end. I had a nice built one on hand, I wanted to retain a swing axle for authenticity (of a SORT), I wanted the wide fives for sure, and I had a pair of long axles and tubes which would bring the wheels out to exactly where they belong. Plus, I didn't want to get in there and chop up too much of the original 356 in order to do the IRS conversion. So . . . all set.
EVERYTHING was just as you kids described! The bearing housing with the drilled out oil passage, "O" ring, the "mysteriously missing on most" oil slinger washer, everything. THANKS again for going through all of that with me so LONG AGO. It turned out to be a terrific help ! ! !
Word of caution though; I wanted to use the best that I had on hand and ended up picking up some even better parts from others. I didn't like the condition of the backing plates on my extra assembly, so I grabbed a pair off of TheSamba and they came with a pair of bearing housings as well. They came all nice and done up (big CAUTION flag from now on) and I thought that I might be able to get away with using them "as-is" thinking that I'd just need to drill out the oil passages and a hole in the backing plate. I found out that what I though was an indent was painted over hardened oil when I drilled into it, same on the housings. If I didn't know what to look for, didn't have the info that you all provided, I would have installed the shiny parts just as they came and ended up with an axle tube oil leak and slipping brakes for the life of the car, and never figured out why.
So . . . progressing nicely thanks to The Gang !
Thanks SO much ! ! ! ! ! ! !
