Thanksgiving

With Thanksgiving coming up, Canada this weekend and you southern guys next month, I thought I'd share a picture one of my wife's friends just sent. This is a pic of a turkey for sale at the Bay store in a community called Arctic Bay. Its on the northern tip of Baffin Island. Used to be a mine there but it closed about 4 or 5 years ago so there's little employment at all there.

I don't know how thankful I'd be if that's what I had to pay to get a turkey.

Yikes! And I understand Bud Light Lime is like $30/12pack! I love thanksgiving! James Bond marathons are usually on tv, eat & drink all day- what's not to like?

$32 a 12 pack. But that's here in Yellowknife. In Arctic Bay you'd have to pay shipping also so add on another $75 - $100. That's why hard stuff is the drink of choice in the remote places...same shipping cost per once for beer, wine or whiskey.

Arctic Bay is likely a dry communtiy though, most are over there. Illegal to possess alcohol.

Sooo...frozen turkey smuggling is a viable operation up there?

Not likely there Mike, alcoholism is not that prevelant in the eastern arctic but it is over here. Scope, Purel, hairspray, perfumes, colone and of cource Lysol all make a good wake me up cocktail.

Northern Stores say it was a labelling error...BS!!! If it and the others would have sold for those prices they wouldn't have said boo. The big issue is that the Gov't has a food mail program that is supposed to reduce the cost of food in remote communities. Air mail frieght for perishable, nutricious food is drastically reduced and subsidised but for years folks have felt that merchants such as the Northern Stores have not been passing on those savings. The Gov't wants to change the program too allow only merchants to have access to it (right now individuals can also take advantage of the subsidsed rates), they claim that the merchants will pass on the savings. BS!

We've had our grandsons, oldest 5 and twins are 3, since Friday and finally took them back to their Mom about 2. I'll be taking a nap and forgetting about turkey and the trimmings. First, a drink!

Brian - I hope that during the time you had the grandkids you taught them ALL the stuff they're not supposed to do!! :-)

Sounds like "teach" is shivering in the corner surrounded by empty bottles...
