Speedy has had intermittent starting trouble lately. It always started fine on cold starts at home. Then upon re-starts away from home, it acted like a classic weak battery. The engine was slow to crank over (even with a hi-torque starter), it would start to crank, hesitate, and then crank over again weakly. Meanwhile I am twisting the key and trying not to flood the carbs, hoping like hell it would catch and not strand me. The first time it happened, I re-charged the battery. The second time I bought a new battery

I'm glad you're up and running David! Ign switches can be frustrating my boat had one that was killing the engine a odd times like between Dana Point and Catalina.....but it actually had a deadman switch in it that could have been the problem too.
The guy I bought the switch from said he put marine switches in his VW's and it served him well, exactly as Alan says better quality, but more $$$$.
David, I have a NOS OEM P-car Bosch switch in mine.
It has worked flawlessly since installation in 2006. It cost about $55 at the time and came with two keys. I routinely use the same key, and it isn't showing brass anywhere -- which indicates a pretty precise keyway to me.
You already know I drive my car year-round and in the rain. What might be significant about that is the terminal side is exposed on the forward side of the dashboard. I don't have fenderwells.
