Work had stalled on my speedster because I needed help getting the body off my donor car chassis. After some help from strong friends, the body is now off!

Its obvious what I need to do to the pan but what will I need from the body? I'm planning to sell the body to a wrecker but I want to make sure I keep the stuff I need. So far, I've only saved the steering mechanism and the license plates. Do I need anything else from the body?

Good list, thank you.

The body is a 1977 regular Beetle and I'm in the Palm Springs, CA area

I will most likely NOT list it on the Samba because it really only makes sense for a local buyer. The body does not roll at all, so the buyer needs a flatbed to haul it away. I might just sell it to a wrecker.
Dude, I would absolutely hold onto your VIN and title. Carefully drill the VIN plate off the car, then save it for later attachment to your door sill or dash.

And, yeah. I'd advise on a sincere apology. Memories here are long -- a simple "I'm sorry," goes farther than you'd imagine. Buying the guy a beverage at a show makes a life-long buddy.
I'm just sayin' ... These are good people. We're all friends here, and I'm pretty sure you'll fit right in.
Indeed, this is where I will start to spend a whole lot more money. I'm down to a bare chassis and only out about $200 and a bunch of beer for the friends that helped me take the body off . . . not for much longer!

I like the part about tearing out the VIN, thats good. I do intend to use the same title so I can't have someone register this body. Thats why a wrecker seems like the best option.

No, the EFI parts are gone. Bought the Beetle without engine or tranny. Only part left was the gas tank and I'm holding on to that.
Hey DS,I got some bad news for you. A 1977 VW pan is NOT what you want to try and register in California when you finish your Speedy! If your pan is a 1977 VIN, hello SMOG Patrol. I'm just sayin'. By the way, the term Moron is used infrequently on this forum. On the other hand, it may apply in this case. You, kind sir, have managed to acquire a VW pan that is NOT Smog exempt! That is a pretty good way to qualify! Welcome to the Madness!
The Vin number tag on the windshield, Make sure you get it also I slid mine under the speedster windshield letting the numbers show as before. It looked perfect.

The 77 will have a side inlet on the tank that would have to be sealed up Way to much trouble for the average builder Let it go or sell it Best to buy a New ghia tube type fuel sender your gauge will thank you. that will prevent the bouncy gauge needle mess.

Best to get a NEW 16 gal CIP-1 tank,, A new super beetle speedo cable. and do run a internally controlled Alternator

I'd save the steering column It can be converted to look early.. The brake reservoir and lines. The horns,, All the body bolts. ,,The old speedo cable rubber spindle seal and E ring. The wiper motor assembly wiper arms I like the newer 1970 center bolt type wiper arms ,married to the 1961 10 inch wiper blade they are a stronger than factory combo. The seat belt stuff Just in case. all the dash bulbs and holders. The pull type light switch if so equipped

The fenders, doors and lids can go to the Samba ads Even the seats. head lamps and tail lamps will sell good also the mirrors even the sun visors

Save the license plate light kit from the housing on the lid...It can be turned into a trunk light kit. It makes a nice one. Just add a slide switch to it.

Smog rules change frequently enough where I'm really not concerned about it. Who knows what the smog laws will be like when I finish the car, so I'll still keep on building and play it as lies when I finish. Besides, I'm going for a nice, clean build, not necessarily a gearheads wet dream. So who's to say that I won't pass smog?
The guys are right about the Smog rules, and that is becoming a concern everywhere , We even have rules like that on the east coast.

If your determined to build on this pan.. I'd go electric or find a older car 67 and 68 were very good years (better built cars) thicker tunnels.

You are going to run into trouble. Get a copy of the CA, emission laws and the V.E.S.C. handbooks Their are some loopholes,, but not many.
