I have Brazilian VDO gauges from the 1990’s, and the gauge back-lighting has always been weak.  The bulbs are BA7s 2-watt so no wonder they’re not very bright.  I’ve had to run them turned up all the way on the switch to see anything at night.

This photo of the original lights is in a dark, closed garage (simulating night time) with the dash lights turned up all the way.  They really are dimmer than they look in the photo.  It has to be pretty dark out to look like this.

If it is twilight out they barely cut it.  Here, I turn them down about 50% and there is essentially zero backlight.

Below, at the top is the BA7s LED bulb from Superbright LEDs and a regular BA7s on the bottom.  The LEDs are direct replacements and are dim-able.

I replaced all of the backlight bulbs with dim-able LEDs.  They just pop right in, but you may find that it is easier to remove the gauge into the cockpit a little bit if you have enough slack in the wiring.  Sometimes the barrel that the bulb fits into is hard to remove from the gauge - Don’t let it get the best of you!

Here are the LED versions, same darkness and turned up all the way.  I like the look - It’s much brighter, for sure.  Can’t wait to try them out about twilight.

And below, the same bulbs turned down about 60-70%.  They only dim a little and turned down all the way they go out but at their lowest light output they’re about as bright as the original bulbs turned up all the way:

I bought a package of ten that was about $15 US, delivered in four days.  Swapping the bulbs started to be quite a job due to the tight rat’s nest behind the dash.  It was a lot easier once I pulled the gauges out a few inches to get at the bulbs on the back.

@DannyP

It’s probably not worth it, in the long run.  They certainly are not bright enough to blind you at night, for sure, and they probably dim enough as-is.

When I was messing with my Eberspacher heater I came across a bunch of Amazon 12V PWM pulse generators for under $15 bucks each.  Don’t know how they do it…..   I couldn’t buy the parts for $15 bucks!

The one I used was not a PWM device because the pump is a solenoid pump.  I just needed a set pulse width presented faster or slower.

@Sacto Mitch

Good suggestion - I Added them at the end of the post, both BA7s and BA9s for those new, Fancy-Schmancy gauges, but I don't know if LEDs are needed with the new gauges.

Thanks for the dimmer info, @chines1!  Thinking of adding that to my Santa list.  Thinking about it while on my bike trainer this morning, LEDs usually work on 3-5 volts DC so expecting them to dim with a 1969 VW headlight dimmer (a wire rheostat, really ) that cuts the voltage enough for incandescent bulbs to dim won't dim the LEDs much - That's why they offer the pulse width dimmer.  It shapes the pulses from a very short pulse duration (dim) to a wider pulse all the way to constant.

OBTW:  One thing I found on one gauge was that the backlight bulb carrier had pulled out of the sleeve on the back of the gauge about 1/2", causing the bulb to pull away from the gauge face.  Simple to just push it back in, but I squeezed the sleeve with my fingers to make it a slightly tighter fit to keep it from pulling out again.

(It's always sum'thin on these cars...)

Oh!  And this is the cute little dimmer Carey mentioned:

I’m sure it varies by car, but my stock 356 gauges came with clear/white bulbs.

The Brazilian replicas have green sockets for background illumination. As such, clear/white bulbs show green anyway.

The current batch of VDO replica gauges have clear/white.  I run a VDO tach with my Brazilian combo gauge and mechanical speedo, so I put green bulbs in the tach so all three are green.

The red glow is from my flamethrower taillights!
