Great isn't it! Really puts a smile on your face. The clatter of a 35 year old air cool aluminium engine with slightly loose valves and straight cut cam gears. The sucking of the dual carbs. The vibration of the "plastic" body. The rush of wind thru the side curtains or over the low top. No need for a radio at all. Now that's what driving a sports car was like in 1957.

Quiet you want? --- try Miata (Opps MX5) or BMW Z3/4 or New VW Bug.

Wolf, yes the Subaru engine is quiet, mechanically speaking, but if you took a ride in mine you would discover that there are other sounds that add to the experience. Different, yes, but definitely not quiet. On the drive to California last year, I found ear plugs helpful, but by the second or third day, either I became desensitized, more deaf or the engine just settled down and became quieter than when I first took off from home.

The drive, more so than the destination, IS the adventure in owning a Speedy!

You wouldn't want to dampen the noise of passing cars honking their horns in admiration, or passers-by that holler "Nice car!" with a big thumbs up, or adoring females clammering to give you their phone numbers, or 18-wheelers' airhorn salute, and at the very least, the beautiful mechanical sounds emanating from your 4-cylinder happily touring at 70-75 mph on a beckoning highway, or ...
