I had a question Pop up today And I need my memory refreshed.

I was thinking that all the old split case trannies were NON syncronized..

Am I right?

I also want to know what was the last year of them.

I have a fella here in NC with a lame 66 bug in need of some new gears. and I want to make sure Im telling him right.. He has one and wants to put it in his 66.

Should I hurt his feelings. or just let him find out..

Barry, The split case had a non synchro first gear, and had a problem with breaksge in either first or reverse. (I forget which)....Other than that, they were plenty strong for mildly modified engines....

This may be a senior moment, but if memory serves, first gear was also a straight cut gear, meaning weaker teeth.....Damage was usualy from a botched double clutch down shift.....I think the last were made around 1960......

Hope this helps.....
Well It dosent matter now. He put the darn thing in even after being warned ..

I do apreciate the insite guys . I had a 60 tranny in my dune buggy a long long time ago .. I was thinking that was about right..

But.. I did warn the guy via email,Thursday.. about the possible risk. He.s gonna have to learn to just dump the clutch and just coast it to a stop. and Not do any down shifting..

THANKS!!!
