Hi Folks,

My glacial progress on my US sourced CMC continues......I've had it up and running with all of the paperwork sorted for past 12 months, (no longer an easy task here in UK). Car drives great ! In the meantime, I had a new interior run up and new hood made. Last november I began the teardown for paint.......

Work and life got in the way, so only now have I got round to splashing on some paint.

After being let down several times by the lad who was gonna lay down the paint, I decided to have a go myself . Although I have all of the required air fed mask, I decided against 2k and went with good old school cellulose, ( I did my last resto, a fiat 500 with 2k, found it an immense pain working in my tiny garage with an air fed and also found the paint to be very brittle after a year or so)

So here is my first trial panel !!

Nice and shiny straight off of the gun (fluke), but a tiny bit dry in a couple of places......Will leave for a few days and color sand to see if the finish is acceptable, but so far I like it . No science in the color choice, its  RAL3001, picked off of the chart in the paintstore. (my interior is black with red stitching)

Rest of the car looks like this (for those who have not seen it in the dim and distant past....: )

Thanks for the comments !

I put in the filler door on the outside....

We have a very strict test over here for amateur built cars, mandating loads of stuff like, light positions, 3 point belts, headrests, dual circuit brakes, idiot lights, 4 way blinkers, side repeaters and a million other things !!! External filler is also on the list......

Crazy thing is, post test, a lot of folks swap seats, change mirrors, Steering wheels etc. Some of the required changes are good, safety related stuff, others are just plain nuts

Cheers

Gerry

ok, so after a trial componding, it came up great........from 10 foot....up close the underlying scratches were pretty visible .

sooooooooo......rubdown with 800 grit, 2 more coats of primer filler and 2 more coats of topcoat. Buff with Farcela G10 then G3....looks good. but I can still see scratches close up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some careful sanding with 3000 grit, and some more compounding has helped 100%

Easy to see why Pro paint costs so much......

Shiny butt....

Electrics reinstated and all operational, I'll reconnect gas tank now and go for the startup... Unfortunately I'm back at work now so progress goes back to slow setting....

Re Gas (Petrol !) cap....We have a very strict test over here for kit built cars before you can register. Thick manual detailing whats required.(300+ pages if you fancy a bedtime read, http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/Trans...n_Manual_1.pdf . Lots of safety related stuff and a lot of really stupid things........I'm good with dual circuit brakes, fluid warning lights, 4 way flashers, 3 point seatbelts, head restraints etc. but they can also fail you for having less than 2.5mm radius on all external/internal edges....(not something a pedestrian would be looking at if ya just run them over....

You will notice yellow flashers as well....

One requirement is for external filler.....(and a tethered gas cap so you don't loose it !!).

Lots of folks pass the test and then do away with the non period stuff, I'm happy to stick with it external
