I run synthetic now that my car has 10K miles. I only use a little in the oil. I am not an air-cooled expert so need to ask the others here. I like the way it quiets down the lifters.
I have no knowledge and so I will definitely follow JPS's advice to use the oil (Valvoline 20-50 all seasons) and filter (Fram 2870A) they specify.
The Man, is providing a 24/24,000 warrantee for the engine and transmission so I would assume he knows what he is talking about and in any case I don't want to do anything that might void my warrantee.
John does say in his Spec Paper that " .... Synthetic oils are not recommended for air cooled engines...."
I did notice the Valvoline racing 20-50 has some zinc....... bart
Bart;
Is that warranty included in the price, or is there an additional up-charge? Do you know if the other manufactures provide/offer a warranty?
Thanks
It was included in the purchase. I do not know what the other manufacturers offer.
I was only interested in a coupe and he was one of the few that offered them, so I did not research the Speedster builders.

Old school thinking. If an engine is older and a bit of a leaker, then synthetic can make it worse, but there's nothing fundamentally wrong with using a synthetic in an aircooled VW engine, as long as it can protect the lifter faces. Gene Berg, one upon a time, decided that synthetic oils were incompatible with aircooled engines (iIrc, they didn't seem to absorb as much heat? I'll have to look that up..), but someone on the Samba recently made the comment that Gene's observations were flawed and the new oil was simply doing a better job and the engine wasn't developing as much heat from friction to start with.
When it's past warranty, there are better filters (Wix and Napa, and others) than the Fram. What's the engine?
1776 and I just couldn't be happier with it...runs strong and cool and quiet (for a VW) ..... it is a joy to drive on backcountry roads at moderate speeds..has 5000 miles.
This is a good article on synthetic:

I run this stuff as it has the ingredients needed for our type of engines:
Where does this Sea Foam additive come into play with respect to ethanol in the gas?

Thank you Dutch for your reply. I did some more research and apparently its best as a gunk desolver in small engines like lawnmores. Just asking to see if anyone in the forum group has ever used it on their Empi or Weber carbs and at what mileage.
