The problem with 547 engines is not tune-ups, but rather any kind of major service that requires teardown and rebuild. There's a lot of trial and error shimming involved to get all of the gear drives right. It's a bit diabolical - you can do a preliminary assembly, check, tear down, shim, reassemble, and recheck, and repeat this whole process several times before getting things within spec. No, i haven't done it myself, but I've seen it in process.

There is (or was) a master mechanic in Germany used by most Carrera and Spyder owners for rebuilds; he was written up in "Excellence" years ago.

Ducati used some neat solutions for some of these problems in their bevel gear drive OHC motorcycles (sliding shaft couples and ball bearings with pivoting centers).

Porsche and Ducati both used out-of-phase gears, that is, the gears did not repeatedly mesh in the same pattern with a 2 to 1 cog ratio; this made gear wear patterns more evenly distributed.
