I was one of the recommenders, although I'm not sure how hearty I was. I think I was pretty clear about it's (un)usability as a daily driver in the Midwest. I always try to be anyhow. If I remember right (and according to your post above), your car was "several $1000s less" than the $18K for Theron's car, and it ran when you bought it a couple of years ago. It's older now, and has a bad engine, but your asking $15K? I wish you well my friend...
If you need an engine, I should have an extra for sale in a couple of months. It's a 1776 with ICTs and a 110 cam, built by Serrano in LA, broken in and sorted out. It's nice and as reliable as a VW can be, and most of the bugs are worked out. I can't offer a warranty though, that's not how these cars (or engines) work.
How much are you asking for the engine?
I'll email you offline within a week on the price for my engine.
First, thanks for the interest. This is an amazing '57 Speedster (replica) built by Vintage Speedsters, Inc. in Southern California, a few years ago. I've spent a lot of money keeping it up, and it's driving like new. My mechanic was extremely dedicated (as was I) and provided precision service to get it to its current state.
Here are some of the details:
- 1957 356 Porsche Speedster (replica)
- Built about 3 years ago
- Approximately 20,000 miles on a rebuilt VW 1760cc engine with 3:88 transmission
- Built on vintage VW chassis, which means its exempt from smog and emission regulations (And, the registration is only $23!)
- I bought it about 3 years ago from Theron, the guy who runs this site.
- Air cooled
- Front disk brakes
- Dual standard carbs
- Trunk carpet kit
- Clifford perimeter alarm
- Half front bra
- Nice Pioneer CD stereo with speakers (Boston and Altec)
- 2 new tires (2 weeks old, other 2 are fine)
- New clutch and brakes
- Some scratches, though very minor
- $250 custom waterproof car cover (I covered it every day, rain or shine.)
- Statfast top and side curtains (

And, I'll use an emoticon, to show I say that with good intent and with humour :-).
