If you watched the semi-disaster that was what's left of the old Rolex Series (now the Tudor Racing Series, combining two+ series into one, big race) last year, they tell us that they've listened to everyone and have taken many, many steps to make it all better this year.  2'nd half of the 2014 season was definitely an improvement but we'll have to see how this year goes - everyone respects the history of the Rolex series and wants to be involved, just not with the screwy rules and classes from last season - we'll see.

Race starts at 2pm on Fox, then shifts to "Fox Sports 2" at 4pm, then over to "Fox Sports 1" at 8 pm (I know - Fox is making it almost as difficult as the Race coordinators, but at least they're covering it).

We worked for TRG Motorsports which was campaigning Porsches back then - they have switched to Aston Martin's North American (and LeMans) racing program, but our real allegiance is to the drivers we spotted for: Pat Long, Jorg Bergmeister, Spencer Pumpelly, Andy Lally, Wolf Hensler and others - All terrific drivers.

These photos are from 2012, on the roof of the Grandstand, about 1pm on Saturday, readying our spotting gear for the race (Race Radios, "TRG" Winter parkas (still got those!), 6 bags of Oreos, 1 Case of Mountain Dew, 3 boxes of Energy Bars, couple of cameras and more, all schlepped up to the roof of the Grandstand, where we stood for the next 25 hours or so.

Oh!  and we'll never forget those Tangerine-colored sunrises over Daytona Beach with the roar of race cars in the background!

Amazing, amazing race.  TOTALLY different than either of the years we were there.  It was like a 24-hour sprint!  Overall car reliability has improved a lot in the last ten years, so then scrapes with other cars causing collateral damage becomes the larger issue, and that bit just about everyone.

I would find it more difficult now, with all that is going on with the different classes of cars with their different speed differentials, to be a spotter for any car - way more happening at any given moment.

Interestingly, no tent fires in the infield, this year, although I saw a couple of sites in the "fan coverage" that surely were candidates.  So much better to be a spotter up on the grandstand roof than down on the Infield with some of those "Rednecks"!!

Still, I miss getting cleaned up, having a nice dinner at "Olive Garden" just outside of the track and then collapsing at the hotel like dead logs overnight, to breakfast at IHOP the next morning and hash over the race with Chris.  Good times....
