I've noticed that evenings on eBay bring about some of the more interesting listings. When I click on them, sometimes a separate warning box pops up on my computer telling me that either the site has a security issue or their is some other anomaly. I've even had some actual eBay fraud warning pop-ups on occasion.

What do you think, the guy is trolling for deposits, then vanishes into cyberspace?

With as much information and photos as I've provided to people on Butch, I imagine someone could set up a phony sale site. My luck, he'd get a valid taker before me!
I emailed the seller day one, now the post is removed and today I got his response:

Hello,

The PRICE is $9,800. The car is in excellent condition. It has no scratches on and hasn't been involved in an accident. The motor runs very well. The car was always garaged. The car is still US registered and the title is clear. The car is in US.
The delivery will take between 3 and 5 working days (with insurance and 30 days return policy). I WILL PAY FOR THE SHIPPING!
If the car does not matches 100% the description, you will return it in maximum 30 days and I will pay for the return shipping fees.PAYMENT will be made through eBay so we can be both protected!
If you agree with my above terms, I'm sure that we can close the deal as soon as possible. I have reserved the car for you until I will have your final answer.
Thank you!

Hello again,
I remove the listing from eBay because i have much offer and i want to have 1 buyer.
The deal will be concluded through ebay,they will set up the shipping and payment details.
Here is how the process works:
- you give me your full name and shipping address;
- I start a transaction on eBay Vehicle Protection Program;
- they send you the payment and shipping instructions;
- you send the money to ebay;
- they confirm me that they secured the funds;
- I send it to you;
- you receive and accept it;
- they pay me.
I will offer you 5 days inspection period.If the item is not like described you will have to ship it back in 30 business days on my expense.If you agree please send me your full name and shipping address!
Thank you!

I mean it is completely too good to be true, but if the funds are escrowed how much risk is there?

Grey, its a scam, plain and simple. Ask this guy where the car is and tell him you will be there tomorrow to look at it.. you will NEVER hear from them again. If its too good to be true, especially on ebay, it is not true. Try doing a trace on his email address.. I can almost guarantee it goes through the UK and ends up in Nigeria.

So after driving in my car, sounds like you have decided to try and buy a real car. Have you been doing any looking?

James
That guy pops up on ebay all the time. He always lists his cars the same way. It's not very hard to set up something that looks like Paypal or Ebay, etc.... and dupe someone into paying with a credit card - happens all the time, got taken for a pair of Pumas by some guy in NY a few years back. I found my car on ebay but paid the seller directly.
In my line of work we ship & receive globally and usually 20 or 40 foot containers.

I offered to travel to see the car within 24 hrs notice anywhere and pickup on my own.
Hand delivering cash or certified funds.

Here is the reply, HEHE

Sorry but the deal can be concluded only through ebay because I am out of state and I made few arrangements already for this transaction.
I don't want to force you to buy it.
Let me know if you are interested.I offer you also an inspection period of 5 days before to accept the car.
I wait your email.
Thank you

James-

I'm looking around, yes.

When I am ready if something pops up on eBay in the color I want I will try to make it happen. Otherwise will order a new Vintage or JPS (still bouncing between the two).

The smart thing might be get a used one first and test the waters so to speak.
If all that goes well, then commission a new build. On the flipside of that argument is that I am very picky about my stuff and am someone who has never been happy with used cars...

I am new to the kit car scene, yet not new to Porsche or VW.
Grey, the used car idea is a good one as it allows you to decide what you do (and don't) like about these cars for a minimal investment. That said, if you're considering JPS and Vintage, throw Beck into the pot as well. They're considerably closer (Indiana) and offer a great product and fantastic customer service. Of course I might be a bit partial, myself ;-). There's a local place in Charlotte (Exclusive Motors) that advertises Becks, but there pictures look a bit older, and the Special Edition folks have been constantly improving the product. Also, you usually get a better price buying directly from the manufacturer.

I'll extend the same offer to you that I did to Mark Lowe - You're more than welcome to come down here and check out mine. Perhaps we could even meet somewhere in the middle (any excuse for a road trip).
