On the way home from Cars and Coffee last Saturday my throttle cable snapped right at the pinch bolt. Since I had purposely left in some slack I was able to fix it well enough to get it home. The throttle is VERY sensitive now, and it is holding the idle up just a hair. It is also on the last 1/4" of the cable, so this is most definitely temporary. This happened because I switched from the crossbar linkage between my Webers to a CSP bellcrank linkage, which had the location of the pinch bolt about 1/4" off the end of the crimped-on thingie (name?). Over time it just wore through the strands of the cable. Anyway, I will have to shorten any cable I get, even one from Carey, so how can I do this in such a way that the problem doesn't reoccur?

On a 200 mile trip home, my throttle cable also broke at that same point. No spare cable on hand, DANG! Found some shoestring on side of road and McGuyver'd the cable. Made the remaining 100 miles home (and then some).

I lost a throttle cable a few years ago near Christainsburg ( I think ) on the way to Carlisle . We staggered the car back to the Hotel after dinner ( Nolan was with us ) and behold, Jack Crosby donated a new cable and Lane Anderson pretty much installed it. Thanks again guys.
Now, with the Ignacio idea in hand, one project this winter will be to do a couple of quick mods / holes and run a secondary cable from the carb thru the rear bulkhead and then thru the rear seat back into the rear seat area. Add three or feet of length to that cable and you could hand pull the throttle if need be. It would take up virtually no space in the rear seat area but let me sleep better at night while on the road.
I carry a spare throttle and clutch cable on board. Once drove my bus 4 miles without throttle cable, mostly down hill fortunately. Pretty hard to upshift.

Exactly...and my breakdown was about five miles from the hotel, just after supper. I adjusted the throttle to very high idle and nursed it the best I could to get back into the parking lot to get things fixed before dark. My secondary cable will preclude that sweat, in fact get you home nicely without an on the road fix if you want.

Damnit Jim.. Now you tell us your secret to getting 95,000 miles on a speedster!
Jim likes to operate on a shoestring budget.
I've carried a spare (clutch and throttle) in every VW I've owned since the early seventies. Never had one break while having a spare.
Lane, I'm not sure if this would work for you - maybe if it was mounted upside down?
Of course, you wouldn't have an issue if you installed a SyncLink...
Actually what I need is the little piece on the end of the cable. That's exactly what I'm looking for.

CIP 1 has them, Lane. I tried to post a link but could not grab it. They work very well.
Gracias, Dave!
Winging its way to me as I type this.
TIP of the DAY
Carry a spare cable ( old or new) and an extra barrel nut (the round piece the cable goes thru and the bolt that pinches the cable) So you can always splice the cable above the trans or in the engine compartment to get you by.
WHAT?!?!?!?
Use something that makes sense instead of using a shoelace?
That's not the "Speedstah Guy" way!
How about a Morse cable, they never break! That's what I have.
Danny----Morse cable---is that a clutch cable or an accelerator cable?
Accelerator Jack. I can use it because I don't have a pan. My clutch is hydraulic.
