Gentlemen, I'm getting toward the end of my speedster project, and will be thrilled to attend the next wine country run, as I live about 10 miles from Napa. To the subject. I, as many of you, wanted some unique details on the speedster. So I took a honda accord tiltable steering column, extented it by one inch, welded the VW yoke on the end, Fabricated an upper bracket.......voila .I installed it today, and it works just like it ought to. I could not use the Urethane VW yoke donut at the end because the Honda column has a u-joint in the middle, and the urethane donut was soft enough that it would allow the u-joint to sag. So after talking to the local VW gurus I just made a steel donut out of 3/8 plate, and again voila. it fits, it works.
The only glitch I can see at this moment is that I will have to do some creative fiberglass shaping to cover the column under the gas tank, and make certain that I have a waterproof seal around the shaft.
Just another goofy idea from a shadetree fabricator
