Allan -

Years ago when the dual-port 1776 that came in my VS needed to be rebuilt, I tweaked it to 1835cc, stock cam grind and retaining the dual single-throat Kadrons. It can maintain highway speeds (70-75mph) all day without a hitch, 29 mpg, not fast but peppy, and best of all - I do not have to fiddle with it between the 3,000 mile oil changes/valve adjustments. It just keeps on running beautifully without skipping a beat.

This has held true for it's 13 year life and 92 Kilometers (56K miles).

Alan, I just received the dual single-throat Solex PDSIT carb kit from aircooled.net for a customer of mine. I have started to do small jobs for local people on aircooled cars only. In a week or two I'll have it installed and report back to you on how it went. They are prejetted so it should go pretty well, famous last words. The kit comes with manifolds and linkage and gaskets for about $450.

I will be up in your area for my annual fall Cape trip, middle to end of October. My friends and I fly RC sailplanes off the dunes, usually stay at the Seascape in N. Truro. The owner lets us fly right off his beach when the wind is West. Been going there for 15 years!
Danny, looking forward to hearing from you and would love to watch you guys fly off the dunes. My wife is an artist and we will bring cameras.
Mickey, thanks for the input. My carbs are at least 15 years old, maybe more. The throtle shafts are very sloppy and I don't like the linkage(among other things). I've got it drivable for now and I am sure I will go with new carbs, linkage, etc. in the long lonely Winter project ahead. I may go with Weber or Kadron, but My guess is I will stay with single throat carbs because of the type of driving that is available around here. E-mail: sssclam@verizon.net Cell:508-237-3975. Anyone in the area, look me up. I'm buy'in. Al
Danny P., Do you use the CB Perf. type hex bar linkage or a bell crank type??? I use the hex bar type and it works until the pivot holes in one end or the other wears a little, then the spitting, coughing, and fun begins....As I understand it the bell crank type works well, but has an idle speed issue as the engine heats and expands..( idle speed increases slightly?) I'm sure there are well made and shoddy makers of both types, and modifications for each...(Just check past threads) Larry Jowdy probably has more experience with both types than most folks...I'm thinking of going to bell crank as I've now worn out two hex type cross bars....

Hope this helps...
Leon, on the 44IDF Webers I and others(BillD and Gordon, and several Spyderclub members) have cut off the air filter top ears and replaced the pivots with rod-ends. Yes, I think it is the CB linkage. See here:

By the way, Leon, you should join Spyderclub, you'd fit right in with all the other nuts(like me!) You have to be a little wacky to have one of these cars, right?

On my customers car, the linkage is a new Scat bellcrank type, haven't installed it yet, tomorrow hopefully.
Alan,

If you decide on K-Dogs, you'll really benefit from the upgraded set that AJ Sims carries
( http://lowbugget.com/kadronpage.html ) Drilled vacuum ports for the SVA distributor, re-bushed throttle shafts, fuel bowl vents, improved linkage, optimized jets and venturies based on your engine size and configuration.

WELL worth the cost for the over-all upgrade.

A bunch our crew live near Plymouth and on The Cape. If you need help getting the carbs on your engine, get in touch, OK?

Luck,

TC

Oh, take a quick peek at your oil pump, check to see if it's over-sized. When a VW engine is built up over 1776 the oil pump is usually swapped out for a higher volume/pressure unit and very often an after market relief cover is installed along with it. It's sort of a quick (but not ALWAYS accurate) way of telling if an engine has been "improved" in some way without getting too deep into things.
