In the old days with my pre 1960 VWs setting the timing was easy now with a 1776 and reading several write ups on setting timing it seems that O degrees TDC is no longer the way to go. I have looked in the knowledge section and have not seen anything there. Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated. My distributor is centrifugal advance and have two webers and don't have a clue about which ones.

Correct timing will depend on your compression ratio and the octane rating of the gasoline you use.

Assuming 93 octane fuel, if your compression ratio is 7.5 to 8.0 then 30 degrees full advance BTDC should be fine; if your compression ratio is 8.5 to 9.5 then 32 degrees would probably be better.

For 91 octane I'd try 28 for the 7.5 to 8.0 and 30 for the 8.5 to 9.5.

It's a try-and-see proposition.
