Timing Light

Well Santa brought me a brand new timing light for christmas and I need some help with connection points. I have never used anything other than a static timing light on my VWs and would like to know where to pick up the power for the light. Seems like a dumb question but...................

12v power for the light can be drawn from the 12v on the coil,
ground goes to a engine ground,the timing light pickup goes to
#1 cyliner wire... pref as close to the distributor cap as possible.

28-29 degrees full advance for a T-1 with an 009 dist.

Be a bit careful, the belt and pulleys like to feed on the timing light's hanging wires :)

YOiu can also draw the power off the the alternator hot side. Lot of juice and the little clamps hang on to the large nuts better than on the coil.

You can get 12 volts off the alt, but it is going to be at around 75 amps and ....it isn't fused. A good source for frying something quick as a wink.

Connecting the light to the 12 volt side of the coil is safer, it is fused on a Vintage speedster wiring harness.

Also, if it is an inductive pickup light (has something like a big alligator clip on the pickup lead, which is clipped around #1 plug wire), the pickup is usually marked "coil side" or "Spark Plug Side" on one side of the pickup or the other. Make sure you have the correct orientation.
