I have just completed my first 500 miles on my new engine, and is time for the first oil change, valve adjustment and timming.
My distributor is Mallory (part # 2354109) 23 series mechanical advance with heavy duty dual points. Special single point with 22 degrees advance at 2500rpm. When I picked up the engine, the builder had told me that the timming was set at 31 degrees total advance.

Can I advance the timming more, let's say (32 degrees) or leave it the way it is. Mallory said 22 degrees at 2500 rpm,....I am confused.
I know a lot vw engines are timmed between 28-32 degrees and not 22.

I meant to write "timing" and NOT "timming". Sorry.

If your builder set the distributor with 9 degrees initial advance then with the 22 degrees added by the Mallory you'd be at 31 degrees all in.

seems to be in the 'rule of thumb' 28-32 band

Note it is possible to adjust the maximum amount of advance added by a Mallory and a kit of different plastic 'spacers' is available from them to use in making this adjustment. This allows to to increase or decrease the amount of initial advance for any given maximum advance.
