I'm about to get back into the swing of things here; thought I'd throw the gist of it out there for general consumption before I do this stuff.
My gas-filler idea is back in the forefront of my plans. The XJ-6 filler neck will be welded onto the JAZ fuel cell's collar with an inverted steel funnel modified to connect them. The hole in the hood will be about a quarter-inch around the flip-top of the filler.
The windshield frame Alan's got for me will be retrofitted with a Lexan windscreen so I can make a bimini top out of an old CMC roof canvas (also in Alan's pile of spares). I went by AutoFab in Laurel, MD, yesterday and they assured me they could knock the grunt work out on those projects. I've seen good things come out of that shop, and I'm happy to not have to do the bulk of that myself.
My stock little breather box will be replaced with a spun aluminium jug, properly plumbed and routed so I don't puke oil at high RPMs (thanks for the recommendations, Carey) and it ought to look good, too.
Another big job is coming up that I might need help with -- my CB Performance steel and aluminum rear brake assemblies have to be replaced with a set made from straight steel. The old ones will not be useful to anybody because the press-fitted centers are about to be a problem where the aluminum and steel come together at the centers. There's a hairline crack all the way around the steel on both sides.
When everything on that list is done, we'll be driving to Connecticut again, this time in the Hoopty, for an exhaust. The whole header will be replaced with a professionally done set of pipes from Chris Foley. I had a really nice chat with him this morning, and it seems like he's exactly the right guy to do it. Again, another solid reference from Carey.
All that stuff unofficially puts off painting the car for another year. And leaves me lacking for a Speedster-type rear-view mirror post and mirror, if anybody had a dingy POS extra lying around.
What's everyone else up to?

All of my pre-Carlisle chores are simple, many of them cosmetic. I guess there's one exception in that #!%&* oil leak that I'm determined to find and fix. Other than that I have to install the permanent muffler, replace the heater box control cable that I broke when installing the new heater boxes, remove the windshield and seal up underneath it, polish the windshield frame while it's off, polish the side windows for improved clarity, etc. I think that there are a couple more that have escaped me for the moment, but that's the gist of it.

Anybody want some slightly used heater boxes?

Oh yeah - I may raise the ride height to stop dragging the muffler on my stupid driveway.
Same list I had last year to get ready for Carlisle:
1. Change the oil and filter
2. Degrease the bottom of the engine
3. Slap a coat of Mother's on it. (that's about as much detailing as I do.)

Oh.....and get a bed cap for the new, "Son of Mighty Power Stroke", Hauler of Pearl.....

Maybe get my XM, IPOD and CB installed in there, too (gotta have tunes and info!)

Yo, Angela....What's this you and Steve gonna make it to Carlisle? Gonna bring Vince, too?

Lane, they didn't make one moving van and stop ... you COULD move to a flatter patch of ground!
Joe, that's my kind of project -- keep the pictures coming!
Alan ... do we need to pass the hat for a digital camera?
And my dear Dr. Nichols ... Kindly bring NEW tow straps this time? The old ones scratched my roll bars up a bit.
;)
Joe: Noooooo. That'd make 2 years in a row you didn't make it. If you can't spare the time to drive, at least fly in. By the way, I am always amazed when folks can chop a top with so many compound curves and make it look right. I can't wait to see the finished car in Hot VWs.

Cory: Huh? I'm not sure it's possible to live any where flatter than I am now. What did I miss?

EDIT: Oh yeah, the driveway thing. That's just how they do it here. Any flatter and I'd be below high tide - not great during hurricane season.
Gordon: I'll second Allan's idea: spare crank sensor is a must. By having it, you won't need it -- so that's a good thing, right? Also, make sure your HRA membership is up to date so you can get free towing, if needed. HRA = Hoopty Roadside Assistance. The Carlisle excitement grows.

Back on topic: I suppose I'll finally have to reconnect my horn and polish up my Nardi. That and a good wash/wax. Not so much to attend, happy to say. I do have an idea to install lights under the dash that would go on w/ door opening, or could be activated by a switch. They'd light up the foot well, I guess, and could be used to read a map or whatever, if needed, in the dark. Anybody else around here done a job like that? LEDs sound like a good option? And here is one for Lane: Since getting my fuel pump replaced and installing genuine VW steel valvecovers w/ bails, in several months of running and mostly sitting in the garage, there are no drips on the floor. None. It is possible.
Yes, towing fans, this year we'll have LOTS of tow straps as I might still be down South before Carlisle and Chris will be bringing an empty trailer from New England in case he finds a cool kit to build at Carlisle. That means TWO "Mighty Power Strokes" available as potential towing candidates.

And yes, I expect to carry a spare cam positioning sensor. Maybe two!

Sure would love to see Joe's car up close and personal.....Looking Good!

I hopin' to have a pair of working wipers, a good stop light switch, windows that go up and down when they are supposed to, and no leaks in my coupe by then. No big deal. Kicking around some other ideas but not ready to share them just yet ;-)

If I haven't sold my speedy by May, I might be looking for an extra driver to get her to the show. Anybody coming near Easton on the way?

Tom...I expect that my brother and myself will be coming from NJ right down Rt78. I'll have to check with him about weather he can make it on Friday or if he can't make it until Saturday morning. Usually he drives down from Essex, Ct., to my house in Hawthorne,NJ.
That is about 2 1/4 hrs. We then have about 1 1/4 hrs to Easton.

Glad to help out if possible.
