My buddy Ed Ericson recently posted a comment that caught my interest.

By increasing his tire pressure he considerably (noticeably?) improved his MPG. Sounds like a winner for smooooth freeway pavement....but what is the optimum pressure for coping with washboard country roads without rattling your teeth?

And...is there a portable 12 volt DC tire pump available? (for quickly adjusting pressure between freeway driving and scenic back roads)

+4 PSI over specified is probably best - keeping speed around 60 mph probably results in more gain though.

All the new Porsche (and other cars like MB SLK) have those uninflated mini temp spare tires and an on board air compressor.  So many out there that never used ones are available for not bad $.  Buy it Now $69 w/FS.

Just FYI, errone: I checked my tires and found 12 pounds in front and less than 22 in back. I pumped them up to 16 front and 26 in back--right about normal. That got me some better mileage, maybe. Near 30 mpg on a 550-mile round-trip to VA Beach, a little of it highway and much of that in rush-hour crawl.

I would not advocate overinflation. If I went to, say, 18 in front and 28 in back I might do a little better, mileage-wise. But maybe not, and much more than that and the ride starts getting rough and squirrelly.
