I used a lost title service out of Las Vegas, Nevada. A few weeks later, a title and registration/plates from Maine arrived at my door. Took those down to Oregon DMV, got my plates (1980 911).

Old vehicles with "short" VINs (16 digits and fewer, generally 1980 and earlier) can require a bit of leg effort to get a title.

there used to be a company called Broadway Title who did this by simply taking advantage of their states (Alabama) "no title" laws for vehicles over 25 years old , they would present the Alabama DMV with all the details of the car you want the title for and get a registration issued to them so in turn they're selling their service which enables you to take the registration to your DMV for title. For example here in PA a title cannot be issued for a 25 year old car unless you have a registration. There are a handful of states that don't require registrations for these older states such as NY, VT, MA, AL and I think AZ but maybe more I don't know about but it's perfectly legal of course not for stolen cars of things like that but I wish more states didn't have these rigid rules so we all could buy more cars without titles.
Tom, with the CA registration slip won't your state issue a title? If not PA does and i can get you a title I bought a speedster in CA a few months back that came with CA reg. and being a PA dealer I simply went to the harrisburg DMV and got new PA title in hand. In fact I have a classic mini registration that I'll be going this week to the DMV to for title. The policy in PA is for anything over 25 years old a title isn't needed but a registration is even if outdated by many years.

here's a picture of a speedster reg from CA, with this you don't need the services of the NY company because a registration is what they would be giving you and you already have it which is what enables you to get title at least here in PA. I buy cars from the U.K. and only get registrations and again get PA title on the spot because I'm a PA car dealer glad to help with this as I'm doing the same thing now for a friend who just bought a porsche 356 and only got registration.
