I helped a fellow SOCer in UK years ago.  He received only an invoice with the car - NO tite or even Bill of Sale.  I bought a rusted rear chassis piece with VA title(transaxle horns were rusted through)  along with 2 other matching VW id plates (from under front hood and windshield).  I cut VIN Id section out of the chassis piece and mailed it to him with title and other plates.  He cut old section out and welded in new and was able to register and drive it in UK.  The original VW chassis was cut and shortened in building the car so it was just a couple more welds that could be easily cleaned up.

I think I'd not post this on a public website, if it were me. What you did there is 100% illegal, pretty much everywhere. The pictures clearly have the VIN on display for anybody to see and search.

It was good of you to help the guy out. I'm not saying it didn't work, but in the eyes of "the man" the world over, it's the very definition of fraud.

The 1986 year on title probably matches the year on the FF COO (or the year vehicle was completed and first registered in Maryland (MD)).  (In US that could cause emission testing for an '86 engine but being 30 years old perhaps not). MD issued an assigned VIN which should be in a door opening - either riveted or a silver embossed sticky label.  For some reason SPED was listed as Make (I'd of thought FF/FiberFab or FF Speedster Replica - but state DMV's are not open for suggestions when registering a vehicle).  Even the plate I listed above from FF has MAKE as the  actual MODEL i.e. Valkerie. Body style of 2S is strange - 2 doors but is S for Sedan (most likely) or Salvage?  NC accepted the MD title and issued a new one.  As long as previous owner signs reverse in proper place I'd think you should be good to go (althought they probably will do an extensive safety inspection).  If you don't have a notarized Bill of Sale from previous owner - try to obtain that.  I'd have him list it as what is on the title.   I doubt CARFAX would track history of an assigned VIN (they seem to only have the new 17 digit VINs on record).  States aren't very helpful in providing prior Title info or correcting stuff on titles.  Recall Carl B. said CN registered his VS replica as a real '57 Porsche Speedster along with the astronomical tax bill - he got corrected but not easily.
