I'm converting a '75 1.8L TIV (Porsche 914) engine to upright via the Joe Cali cooling method. Accumulating parts now - although I've stripped the engine of pancake stuff. Can I use the Solex dual set up from a similiar year VW Van? They seem to have alot of hoses and polution stuff on them plus they seem to sit rather high. I don't plan to do much to modify the engine - just a rebuild. Looking for dependability. Hoping to use heat exchangers from a VW Van to get heat to car vice going with gas heater.

Yup,

You can use the stock Solexes just fine, but check the throttle shafts to be sure that they're good. The stock cross bar linkage put a LOT of strain on that part and over the years it's pretty rare to find a set that's usable.

There are folks, usually in California, that can press in new bushings for you. I believe that there is also someone offering new sets. Probably hit a Type II site and find out all about this stuff.

The single progressive Weber carbs (which run like crap on the Bus) actually run pretty well on the Porsche version of the motor. I had one on my 71 914 for years and LOVED it. Maybe it's something in the cam . . .

There are two different length intake manifolds, tall and short, you'll need to decide which kind fits with the linkage and shroud that you're using. I have both kinds, if you run into trouble, just email me and I can ship you the right ones. No problem, Five Finger Forum Discount applies.

Also, they have a dual Kadron kit that is cheap and just the balls!
If you want to take advantage of that little powerhouse, go for those. I have a buddy who can hook you up with a good used set. If you looking for a career, rather than a hobby, grab some dual throat Webers. It's like being married, LOTS of tune-up time with a little love at the end of it all.

Luck,

TC
