In my haste to build years ago I installed the Pertronix Flamethrower with solid core wires (later to find it's a no no). Was fine for a while but started having misfires etc. so I went back to basics. I replaced with stock Bosch wires, new plugs, cleaned the Dells, bought the Pertronix 3 ohm coil to replace the blue coil (figured I might as well follow suit). Now it won't fire at all (plug wire on a spare plug (grounded)  so I'm guessing the module is fried.

After reading the posts out here I back to wondering if this is all worth it. Keeping an 009 in your pocket, etc. in case it craps out on the road. Thinking of just going back to an 009 and calling it a day.

This has been an issue in the VW world as well for a long time- a Pertronix module will go for years in 1 car while it will burn out regularly in another Beetle with a very similar engine.  I've wondered in the past if engine compartment temps had something to do with it, but never had the chance to look at 2 otherwise seemingly identical cars, so that's as far as it ever went.  I believe the Compufire is a better built unit, but they are no longer available (I seem to remember something about the company that owns the Pertronix brand buying them out?).  Sorry I can't be more help- I guess the answer is to go back to a 009 or step up to a CB Magnaspark distributor.  Al
