1. Is it currently registered or does it have appropriate paperwork to get it registered in target state.
2. Where is it located (cross country shipping is costly).
3. Is there a parts list for engine and was it built properly.
4. How is fiberglass (stress cracks)- could be due to weak/flexing frame/chassis.
5. What's condition of paint? (a quality repaint can cost $3k).
FINALLY- is price right - you can fix any flaw it just cost $$$.
Justin,
There are some questions that you, as a perspective owner need to answer:
1. What do you want to spend?
There are running speedsters out there from $9k to $50k
2. Can you build/fix/repair the car?
The $9k cars need your mechanical expertise, otherwise you will need to pay someone to fix/maintain it, and you can end up with $30k in a $12k car.
3. Do you want to build/fix/repair the car?
I built a Cobra replica, but I didn't want to build a Speedster (my choice).
4. Are you looking for the car to hold it's value?
The turnkey Vintage, JPS, IM's, etc. tend to hold their value more than the Kits. People will pay more when they know what they are getting.

1. Who has been servicing the car before now, and may I have the phone number and mechanic's name?
2. Was this car built in someone's garage, or by a company? If it was a company, where is the builder's number on the car?
3. How many modifications have been made since you bought the car from the last seller? What are they, and can you point to them?
4. If there were three things you'd change about the car, what would they be?
5. What is the car's main pending repair right now? (Compare that one to the mechanic's opinion after you've thought about the car for a day or two.)

My opinion. I bought a lemon and made lemonade.
Here would be my list...

1. How and where is the car registered?
2. In what way(s) has the car met/exceeded your expectations?
3. In what way(s)has the car failed to meet your expectations?
4. What do you wish you had done differently (engine, trans etc)?
5. Right now, today, if you could afford it/have vacation yada yada
would you feel comfortable jumping in and driving cross-country?

Lane - It's going to be tuff to beat the thread-off-track record of 2 posts (re; Marty Mioprimo G's post under Newbies - Not Getting Sleep)!! LOL

Justin - keep in mind that not every seller is upfront when trying to sell their used car, so the questions you ask should focus on the areas of ownership that concern you the most, and then take those answers with a grain-of-salt. You're doing the right thing though, asking questions and doing your homework on a website like this before jumping off the bridge of Speedster purchase.

I wish this site was around when I bought my Speedster! I love my VS, but this website could have guided me through the maze of cars I looked at over a period of 6 months.

Answer: Probably not.......but if it was to drive (and eat) my way across Tuscany....well, that would be a whole 'nuther thing!! Gone in sixty seconds!!

I had exactly the same 5 answers as Jack Crosby, but I thought I would sound like a smart-alek for posting them.

Thanks, Jack.....and you're learning fast!!
