Todd -

For what it's worth - I think the convertible top, whether you use it or not, gives the car a more 'finished' look (particularly when topped off with a color-matched quarter-tonneau). But like everything else about personalizing these cars, it's all about your own preference.

However, like the others alluded to...it's beter to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it!

Peace - Out!
I almost never used the top....one time I got caught in the rain. I think the lines of sight with th the top up are downright frightening.....you might actually be better off in a Hefty bag with eye holes in it. Having just said that I don't believe in the top, I think the SPeedster looks absolutely stupid without one folded in the back seat. If you want a topless car, go for the Spyder.
I agree with Stan... the top will not do anything except keep a little heat in and the wind out. Case in point, last night the wife and I took the POS out on the town, eventhough it was 62 degrees and I would have prefered the top down, she said that if we were going to take it the top would have to go up. I always cave, but I still drove the car last night. For the small investment that a top will set you back... it is worth it. Also, if you ever cover the car for storage months, it also helps brace the cover up too.
I read here in another post that the top was meant to be "an emergency top" by the designers at the factory. Let me tell you it comes in handy, especially when you get unexpected rain or, as Alan says, the sun is beating hard on you. I, for one, use it a lot, even here on tropical weather; helps you keep a little privacy from a-hole types too....
Now that's a really hard post to follow. Oh, well . . . I've had my JPS for six years now. It has never been driven with the top up. I put it up once in the garage, just to see how it worked. Immediately put it down again. Five years later, I did the same thing. Being a new top, and never been stretched out, it lacked about one inch for closing at the header. So I put it back down for the second time. Probably should take another look at that some day . . .
