So I saw that the previous thread on this topic had been closed. I have a CMC that sits on a late 60's chassis. Anyway, I have a question regarding this issue. I see the steering box and wanted to know if it would make sense to make an access hole through the front trunk area. If some of you have done this how and what did you use to cover the hole you made ?

I did that on my Speedster and it certainly made things easier. I think Beck made it standard not too long after.
I drilled a 1" hole in my first Spyder and put a rubber plug in the hole. I believe I used an antenna plug.
FYI, if you adjust the box you need to adjust the front large nut and allen bolt first before the slotted screw on top.
lots of info on Youtube
You are correct. But not all of it is good info...
Steering Box maintenance/rebuilding here- check out the post by Hotrodsurplus half way down the page. This is the best info I have found. Al
Nice write-up. Thanks, Al.
Yeah, that is good. Copied, pasted, and saved as a Word doc.
Thanks, Al.

Copied, pasted and saved as a PDF, and attached below for anyone else who is interested.
For me, the coolest part of this is how to set up your steering to eliminate slop.
He says the first place everyone normally tries to fix this (the set screw and locking nut on top) is actually the last thing to monkey with, and that the problem is usually elsewhere.
He also says it's not usually in the large adjustment on the front, either, but in how the box was aligned on initial installation.
At any rate, a good read for anyone with 'loose' steering issues.

I thought it would be a good idea to save that tutorial in my service manual, only to find that I had already included it from that forum a few years back.
GREAT tutorial......
If you haven't saved it by now, do it.
