I'll be converting my swing axle to IRS.

Purchased an entire IRS suspension (double spring plates)...the brackets to weld to my existing  torsion bar...and the 'jig' to accurately determine their placement.

I like the idea of replacing the stock IRS double plates with single blade 'Adjustable'  spring plates that are for a 26 9/16" torsion bar....What size is mine?

I recall information (from where I forget) about how to recognize the difference between the three different size torsion bars. Mine has the solid retaining caps, not the open 'hole' ones.

Yours don't stick through the end caps (which are solid), so they are type 1 swingaxle torsion bars- 21 3/4" long, and the splines to mate with the outer splines of the bars is in the plates. If you look at an irs springplate, the housing to capture the outer splines is several inches (the bar itself is 26 9/16" long) outboard of the springplate itself, and the endcap will have a hole in it. I believe Intermeccanica uses 24mm torsion bars on all it's irs based cars.

Click on the link on the bottom of the right hand column. I don't know what the end cap looks like for type 3 (24 11/16" torsion bars).

3 diferent size bars(length).thus 3 diferent offset plates for the irs,and 3 diferent for the swing.mix and match as you see fit if you have the ability to do so.I will be using the 24 11/16 with the 21 3/4" bars in mine. not complicated. but if you want to keep the "ride you have" then get the plates for the bars you already have. if it was swing it's probably the short bars.

By "offset plates" do you mean spring plates?

First of all... swing axles require the longer spring plates.

The geometry of the IRS requires the stubby plates. No "mixing and matching" possible!!!

And since the diameters of the spine indexing is the same no matter the torsion bar length, I've never heard of, nor seen mentioned, specific spring plates matched to bar lengths....Yet you're telling me there are three separate swing axle spring plates and three separate IRS spring plates?

yess. the diferent length bars, take diferent plates.well make that 6 different paltes.and yes mixing&matching is possiable IF YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO SO. first of all, if you have to ask how..then you probably dont have the ability to do so.so it's a non issue. second of all... the splines in the 3/6 different plates are...hear it comes...offset.3rd of all the swing units can be shortened to fit the irs,but why??if you just want to save some$$ and already have the longer swing units. and 4th of all it's a good idea to do some work to the ends of the irs plates so they can slide farenough to properly aligine the rear toe.most have just a v cut into the end and it needs some fitting or the movement is limited.5th be sure to preload them, and preload them the same. a guy in the local vw club put some on his type 2, set it down it was too low...so he spent $$$$ to lower the front...then comes along some asshole(aka me) and tells him he has the rear plates on rong.....now he's spent about a grand or more on the front end..and it's way too low for the rear once he fixed what was rong.and dosent realy know what to do,cant send back the front end stuff and dosent want it on the sand all the time. be smarter than what your working on.
