This may be a little unusual, but,
I am thinking of building a very small teardrop caravan to pull behind my speedster. It will only be used to take to shows, as something to sleep in. Last year we used a tent and found that there just wasnt enough room to pack everything in the car. I have thought about a luggage rack, but fear that a fibreglass deck lid just wont be strong enough !

My question really is, has anyone on the site fitted a tow hitch to a Speedster replica?

Ideally I want to fit one where the ball part can easily be removed, when not in use, (some Volvos have a sort of goose neck fitting that can be taken off)

Any help or ideas would be great

regards

There was a hitch made for the VW Beetle. It fastened to each of the frame horns under the trans and the two prongs met near the muffler and a single bar extended out from under the car for the ball to mount. You could remove the ball, but the ball mount stayed in place. On a Speedster that would be pretty low and ground clearance would be a problem.
Maybe not....

Jordy Christiansen from Ohio has been towing a small, motorcycle-style trailer to Carlisle for years, now, and it doesn't seem to be too much for his IM (think he's running a 2110, too).

Admittedly, that ball tab sticking out back will get pretty low at times, depending on angle of terrain.

Contact either Jordy at jchristiansen at cottsystems.com

or Tom DeWalt: tomdewalt at dewaltsrv.com

Tom sells small, tear drop, trailers that cold fit a Speedster and knows about the trailer hitches, too.
Ernie,
I'm thinking that the secret to towing a boat behind a VW is to have a r-e-a-l-l-y long trailer neck, for backing into the lake.

I towed a ski boat behind my Corvair for many years - and I can relate some very funny stories (funny now, not then) of exhaust pipes disappearing below water level and stalling the engine - the bottom of the boat, sitting on the trailer, wasn't even wet yet! Had to unhook the trailer and pull the car out with a "snatch" strap. Of course my wife has all the pictures to document my ineptitude.
