Mike Gagnier of Precision Engineered Performance in North Carolina has finished my new transaxle. Hopefully we addressed all the deficiencies of the one that came with the car. Here is what he put in:

New white rhino case and nose cone

3.44 r&p

3.78 Super Beetle first and second

.93 Weddle fourth

New Erco Super diff and billet side covers

new hardened and ground thrust washers

all new SKF bearings

new Weddle USA made axles

Mike was super to deal with and patiently answered all my questions. The price was half!! of what one of the California builders quoted me. Mike builds a lot of the transaxles for all the East coast drag racers so he definitely knows how to make a street trans live. With all the good stuff we put in this thing it will take anything my car will put it through.

Very cool, Frank! So, when will it be in the car? I want to hear what you think of the 3.44/3.78 for 1st. Do you know what Mike put in (early- 1.31 or later 1.26) for 3rd? With the .93 for 4th it's going to feel a little like a close ratio box (that means fun!).

Just so you know- I don't know why people call it a "Superbeetle" mainshaft (1st and 2nd) as it was in all type 1 transaxles after either 1972 or 1974. VW changed the tooth count slightly (I think from 10/38 to 9/34 and the ratio went from 3.80 to 3.78) for 1st, the latter being stronger. That said, you've got to be an animal to break the early 1st (I'm talking drag racing, dropped clutches from a stand-still and trying to lift the front wheels off the ground), so it's not something to worry about (unless you're a stop light terror). Is the gear carrier (pictured with the pinion shaft and superdiff) aftermarket aluminum as well?

I don't think he put in a new gear carrier Al. It wasn't on the list of new parts. The third gear is a 1.31. Even with the .93 I'm still a little worried about it being geared too high. But I will find out soon enough. I just finished sealing up the head nuts and I'm going to look into a heat shield next Bruce. My goal is to have it running by August.
